  • Update: Westword Music Showcase line-up

Update: As with year's past, before the ink's even dry on the schedule, we've had to make made some minor more changes. Among the recent ones: We've moved the metal showcase from Andrew's to Broadways (two doors down from Bar Standard, next to the pawnshop), and moved the punk line-up to Bannock Street Garage. We've also added two additional acts  (the Culhanes and Buckner Funken Jazz), and swapped the time slots of a few others at Dazzle. And in case you missed it last week, Andrea Ball is

  • Today's Night & Day featured event: Girls Rock! (Are you ready, Denver?)

The film Girls Rock! is strictly a girl thing, and by that I mean a little girl thing. The visual story of the original Rock 'n' Roll Camp for Girls in Portland, it aims straight between the eyes of any rebel tween or teen girl with an itch to be a rock star. Oh yes, and it's fascinating for their parents, too, who might be charmed, knowingly unsurprised, amused beyond belief or terrified to death by what unfolds on the screen. We first wrote about it last spring in this Night & Day entr

  • Mile High Makeout: Coming home

Photo: Adam D'Antonio Jeremy D'Antonio left Colorado a while ago, taking his beautiful acoustic project, Tiny Television, with him. Since then, he has returned a few times for a show or two. On January 16th, however, D'Antonio and Tiny Television make a triumphant return, celebrating the release of a debut full-length album at the hi-dive. With Dan Craig, Britt Rodemich and Tim Pourbaix opening, the night promises to be a warm homecoming.

  • Mike Marchant gives away unreleased music

Towering rocker and singer-songwriter Mike Marchant has a well-documented penchant for giving away music. When his band, Widowers, released its debut album, Marchant couldn't give away copies of the painstakingly recorded beauty fast enough. Little has changed since then, as evidenced by a recent e-mail the psych-pop tunesmith sent. The message contained links to download a handful of Widowers and Marchant solo tracks, as well as an exhortation to share liberally. One of those tracks is a concis

This weekend, Bender's Tavern is going to be jumpin as the bar plays host to the 2009 edition of the Ultimate Music Experience, a two-day audition in which eighty or so bands showcase in hopes of landing a slot at this year's Capitol Hill People's Fair, the two-day extravaganza slated to take place on Saturday, June 6, and Sunday, June 7, at Civic Center Park. The UMX, which kicks off at 10 a.m. on both days, is free and open to the public and will feature acts performing ten-minute sets (think

  • Here we are. Now entertain us: Dualistics channel Nirvana. Sheryl Renee pays tribute to Marvin Gaye.

Got plans this weekend? If not, you do now. There's a couple of shows totally worth checking out featuring local musicians paying homage to a pair of past icons, groundbreaking, paradigm shifting artists who left this world violently and prematurely. This Friday night at the hi-dive, the Dualistics -- and a slew of guests, including members of Hello Kavita, Achille Lauro, the Wheel, Ghost Buffalo, and John Common, Dan Craig, Jen Korte, Mike Marchant, Angie Stevens -- will be playing In Utero, Ni

  • Westword Music Showcase reviewed: Mo's

Chad FahnestockJoshua Novak helped break in Mo's on Broadway. See more photos from Mo's and the other venues at westword.com/slideshow. Andrea Ball, 12:00 p.m. Andrea Ball kicked off the Mo's lineup with an enjoyable set of mostly piano-driven, literate yet approachable songs that fit well in the Mo's space, outfitted as it was with lots of comfy chairs and couches and a white-and-blue paint scheme. Ball's band -- a violinist, bassist and drummer -- seemed to have a lot of fun playing these s

  • Over the weekend: UMS Festival

Julie Davis of Bela Karoli (A.H. Goldstein)Last night, the four-day UMS festival wrapped, and most of our crew made it out for at least part of the fest. And while we rarely agree on anything, we're all pretty much in agreement that Danielle Ate the Sandwich absolutely stole the show with one of the breakout performances of the fest. Other highlights included Boba Fett and the Americans guerilla style marching band performances outside the Skylark and hi-dive on a drizzly Saturday night, whic

  • Jen Korte's new album is, like, um ... wow! Just freaking wow!

Doug BeamSo a few weeks ago, I got a note from my pal Jonathan Bitz, who was raving about Jen Korte & the Loss's new record. In his succinct, inimitable, articulate style, he told me everything I needed to know about the album in the expanse of just five words: "absolutely beautiful. restrained. spacious. dynamic." I trust Jonathan's sensibilities implicitly, mainly because our tastes so often overlap. Needless to day, I've been absolutely dying to hear the disc for myself ever since. As

  • The Out East Music Feast promises to live up to its name

(Click to enlarge and print out for $5 off)Oh, and speaking of Jen Korte, she's playing a gig next weekend that sounds utter killer. The Out East Music Feast, as it's been dubbed, features Korte and her band the Loss, with a slew of excellent female singer-songwriters, including two of my absolute faves, Angie Stevens and Judith Avers, along with Melanie Susuras, Coles Whalen, Britt Rodemich, Sarah Slaton, Erin Van Horn, Kim O'hara and Veronica May. And get this, in addition to playing their
