  • Wake-Up Call: Looking for work is hard work

Today is officially Keep Colorado Working day – but where, exactly, are people supposed to be working? Yesterday, Intrawest Corporation– which runs Winter Park and owns Steamboat and Copper Mountain – announced companywide cuts. (Happy opening day, Winter Park!) And here in town, longtime businesses are looking at layoffs – and worse – as holiday sales fail to materialize. Colorado leaders know that the immediate outlook is grim, which is why Governor Bill Ritter last week announ

  • Kenny Be's Worst-Case Scenario: Republican Job Fair

Click here to see a larger image; it'll take a few seconds. The last election put many Republicans out of work. As difficult as it is to feel sorry for Bob Schaffer, Tom Tancredo, Wayne Allard and Marilyn Musgrave, it's even more difficult to imagine them dusting off their resumes and seeking gainful employment in this brutal new economy. Their legislative work involved lots of "posturing" on immigrants, vouchers, guns and gays. They're all going to be in for quite a shock to find t

  • Rush Limbaugh, Peter Boyles see ideology behind Rocky Mountain News' troubles

In his nationally syndicated December 5 broadcast, robust yapper Rush Limbaugh made mention of the Rocky Mountain News being put up for sale. "Did you see where Scripps Howard may have to close down the Rocky Mountain News?" he asked. "Propaganda organs are just falling by the wayside. The Obama campaign staff is being pared with these layoffs. I mean, how many of them are media?" KHOW's Peter Boyles offered a related argument earlier in the day, suggesting that Rocky sins such as publishin

  • Tony's Market seeking serious foodies

Those of us who hang out within the walls (and behind the alleys) of Westword are peeing our pants right now -- and not because every news channel in Denver is scaring the shit out of viewers with their panic warnings to stay the hell off the streets. No, we're having bladder control issues because Tony's Market is taking up residence in the former Planned Parenthood office space at 950 Broadway, directly across the street from Westword headquarters, and while we have to grudgingly wait until the

  • Calling all (really) experienced waitresses

If you've got three decades of serving experience under your belt, there just might be a position for you at a new greasy spoon opening its doors this month in Aurora, and currently advertising on Craigslist. And I stress might, since Howard -- the gentleman doing the hiring - also wants to check your references. Thirty years of slingin' hash and turnin' tables apparently does not automatically qualify you for a spot at this "unique" liquor-license suburban diner, whose name and concept Howard i

  • For Chrissakes, someone give Steve Perfors a job!

White collar day laborers on Speer? At 6 a.m., Steve Perfors hit the streets of Denver looking for a job. Literally. As commuters were making their way into downtown this morning, they were treated to the unusual sight of Perfors, dressed as if attending a job interview, standing on the side of Speer Boulevard with a cardboard sign reading, "Student/4.0 GPA/Wants Career/Is anyone HIRING?? Take my resume." It's no joke, says Perfors. The 26-year-old says that in the past three weeks he's put

  • Report: Computer geeks sitting pretty -- or at least not that ugly -- in the Colorado job market

"I know my way around these babies. I'll be fine." Good news for at least some job seekers: The Denver Business Journal reported today that a recent survey by ConsultNet, an IT and engineering staffing agency, shows that 25 percent of surveyed companies expect to hire more IT and engineering staff in the next six months. That's up from 10 percent that added workers in the prior six months. The Journal also reported that 13 percent of surveyed companies are increasing their IT/engineering budge
