  • Update: Westword Music Showcase line-up

Update: As with year's past, before the ink's even dry on the schedule, we've had to make made some minor more changes. Among the recent ones: We've moved the metal showcase from Andrew's to Broadways (two doors down from Bar Standard, next to the pawnshop), and moved the punk line-up to Bannock Street Garage. We've also added two additional acts  (the Culhanes and Buckner Funken Jazz), and swapped the time slots of a few others at Dazzle. And in case you missed it last week, Andrea Ball is

  • Mile High Makeout: Dead Days

Every year, I hear people talk about the period between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day as a dull and lifeless time for live music. If you went to college, you'll remember that they sometimes called the study period just before finals "dead days" because nothing would be happening on campus. People act as if the holidays are Denver's dead days, largely because the touring band circuit slows considerably. But our dear town is far from dead.

  • Mile High Makeout: Binge and purge

On the third day of an alcohol, caffeine, fat and sugar binge in the name of the winter solstice and some folks' savior, I'm feeling lethargic, unhealthy, dirty and startlingly unattractive. This is the stuff New Year's resolutions are made of. All I want to do is eat raw foods, spend four hours in the gym and try to save my internal organs from becoming completely enrobed in a protective layer of sweet, fatty tissue. In spite of all that, I'm going tonight. And you probably should too.

  • Fertility in fallow fields, part two

Last night, hundreds of invited guests drank for free at a private party at the Larimer Lounge. Good thing, too. Lots of those folks were as broke as you are, and though Miller High Life might not be your preferred lager, it tastes mighty good pro bono. The night before, I ran into a bunch of other folks at the Larimer, each struggling in his or her own way, but all bursting with creative energy. And these folks weren't even getting free drinks!I met Boulder-based singer-songwriter Kristina In

  • Musicians supporting the people of embattled Gaza

In a beautiful collision of altruism, more musicians are donating their time and talents to help kids this week. Instead of helping the children of Denver, as the Denver Gives March Music Jam will, these musicians will benefit kids on the other side of the world. On Friday night, March 27, at the Driscoll Ballroom on the DU campus, you can catch a world-class lineup for a mere ten clams. The indomitable Ian Cooke, the captivating Joshua Novak and the powerfully charming Hello Kavita will all con

  • Snake Rattle Rattle Snake debut tonight at hi-dive

Although we just got a ton of snow, there's still a reason to get out, drive through the white stuff and check out the club debut of Snake Rattle Rattle Snake, a local superband of sorts that includes Doug Spencer and Hayley Helmerecks (Monofog), Hayley's brother Will, Kit Peltzel (Mr. Pacman, Joshua Novak, Space Team Electra) James Yardley (Hawks of Paradise) and Andrew Warner (Bad Luck City, Red Cloud). Warner says the band has a dancey sound but still keeps a dark edge thing going. Think earl

  • Westword Music Showcase reviewed: Mo's

Chad FahnestockJoshua Novak helped break in Mo's on Broadway. See more photos from Mo's and the other venues at westword.com/slideshow. Andrea Ball, 12:00 p.m. Andrea Ball kicked off the Mo's lineup with an enjoyable set of mostly piano-driven, literate yet approachable songs that fit well in the Mo's space, outfitted as it was with lots of comfy chairs and couches and a white-and-blue paint scheme. Ball's band -- a violinist, bassist and drummer -- seemed to have a lot of fun playing these s

If you caught the show last night, we played it straight again, just like the old days, you know, just two turntables (well, CD decks) and a microphone(s). No dogs, no slogans, just great beer. We also featured a gaggle of new local music from Boulder Acoustic Society, Paper Bird, Joshua Novak, Pictureplane, the Legendary Beep Beeps, the Food Chain and the Fresh Breath Committee, along with some cuts we haven't played in a while. We also started tweeting our playlist last night for the benefit o

  • Line-up for this weekend's Hot IQs BBQ is, well, hot!

Just caught a whiff of the line-up for this weekend's Hot IQs barbecue, and we must say it is absolutely, positively killer, friends. Besides being IQs' very last show ever -- unless, of course, the band plays the seemingly inevitable reunion show in a few years from now -- the line-up equates to nine hours of musical wonderment. Discount Cinema, a newer outfit that's got folks around town talking, headlines a bill that also includes the Kissing Party, Wire Faces, I Sank Molly Brown, Joshua N
