  • Mile High Low Lifes, a bunch of class acts

So last week, we talked about the Mile High Low Life compilation and noted that the punk is thriving in Denver. And now we can see why the scene is so healthy. Stopped by 3 Kings Tavern for the CD release party on Saturday night and was struck by the turnout, which was impressive to say the least. Kings was packed to the gills. More impressive, however, was finding out the way the bands determined performance order for the night. Bart McCrorey (Valiomierda, Frontside Five) from Five Core Records

  • Saturday: Grandma Dynamite Tribute at 3 Kings Tavern

Tomorrow night at 3 Kings Tavern, a cavalcade of current and bygone Denver acts and musicians will be on hand to celebrate the life of Wendi Wikstrand, aka Grandma Dynamite, a very dear friend of mine and the scene, who passed away at the end of October. Slated to appear on the bill are Hellafied Funk Crew, Blister 66, Hippie Werewolves, Rocket Ajax, Sick, Horse, Lola Black, Death Valley Pom Squad, Digg, Throbbing Pink Jesus, Sloan Valve and Assault. Doors are at 5 p.m. Cover is $10, with all pr

  • Cephalic Carnage playing benefit this weekend and Summer Slaughter bootleg

Later this week, we'll be unveiling a new feature on the blog called The Denver Boot, which will feature exclusive live recordings taped by our pal and frequent commenter, SxPxDxCx. The first installment will be the Cephalic Carnage and Brujeria show taped earlier this month at 3 Kings Tavern, and we'll be uploading the recordings shortly. In the meantime, allow us to direct you to this two-song bootleg we found from a set Cephalic played on the Summer Slaughter tour in 2007. The Cephalic gents

  • Flier of the week: The Red Light Dance Party at 3 Kings Tavern

Alright, this may just be the coolest flier we've seen all year. This one's all about the old school. All day, every day, Playboy. Know what I'm saying? We're talking Sharpies, an Xacto knife, some old magazines and a glue stick. Fuck Photoshop. This is how is used to be done. And as a bonus, it's pimping something equally as ill: Marie from Ghost Buffalo's new dance night, Lil Thunder's Red Light Dance Party at 3 Kings Tavern. -- Dave Herrera

  • There's no shortage of things to do tonight in the Mile High City

Tonight is one of those nights you wish you could be multiple places at once. Over at the Bluebird, Hot IQs are hosting their combined video premier and record release party with Young Coyotes, the Chain Gang of 1974 and Team Firefox. (Stream both songs from the  7-inch and view the promo videos after the jump.) Over at 3 Kings Tavern, the titans of metal, Cephalic Carnage, Enemy Reign, Dead Speak and Clinging to the Trees of a Forest Fire, are teaming up for a benefit for Andrew Sawyer. And th

  • Nine75's Charley Sinden lands new gig

Looks like Charley Sinden, the former executive chef at Nine75 (975 Lincoln Street), has landed a new gig over at the Red Room (320 EastColfax Avenue). When we ran into Charley last night at 3 Kings Tavern, he was pretty pumped about the new job, which he officially starts today.

  • Mile High Makeout: Binge and purge

On the third day of an alcohol, caffeine, fat and sugar binge in the name of the winter solstice and some folks' savior, I'm feeling lethargic, unhealthy, dirty and startlingly unattractive. This is the stuff New Year's resolutions are made of. All I want to do is eat raw foods, spend four hours in the gym and try to save my internal organs from becoming completely enrobed in a protective layer of sweet, fatty tissue. In spite of all that, I'm going tonight. And you probably should too.

  • This weekend: Autokinoton closes up shop at 3 Kings Tavern, Fight With Food drive at Toad Tavern, Horse, 3 the Hardway and Photo Atlas CD release

Well, sadly, the rumors that have been swirling about for a while now are indeed true. Autokinoton is about to be put to rest. Despite issuing word this past summer that there wouldn't be one, the act's final show is slated for Saturday, February 28, at 3 Kings Tavern, with Kingdom of Magic, Spirit of the Stairs and Space in Time. A moment of silence seems to be in order. Godspeed, gentlemen. You had a great run and will be sorely missed.

  • Frontside Five signs with DC-Jam Records

Skate punk kingpins, Frontside Five, recently profiled in Thasher magazine, has joined the roster of DC-Jam Records. The Missouri-based imprint, which is also home to legendary skate punks JFA and McRad, will release the band's upcoming full-length, Resurrection Cemetary, in early March, and to commemorate the album's release, the Frontside crew is planning to host a CD release party at 3 Kings Tavern on Friday, March 27. There will be plenty of opportunities to catch the act before then, as i

  • Ghost Buffalo gets robbed. May the burglars burn in hell.

Photo Jesse DawsonWhile we're not exactly the type of folks to ever wish ill will on anyone, here's hoping that karma is indeed a boomerang this time around and that the presumed lowlifes who burglarized our friends in Ghost Buffalo burn in hell -- or at least get a flat tire or something. Thanks to a break-in at their apartment, Marie Litton and Matt Bellinger are now minus a computer, an acoustic guitar, a new iPod, a digital camera and a bunch of other stuff, including some of the music Marie

  • The Denver Boot: Ghost Buffalo's final show - 05.12.09

A Week ago this evening, the members of Ghost Buffalo played what was presumably their last show ever, at 3 Kings Tavern. While it's barely been even a week, it's safe to say that we already miss them. If you feel like we do, then you'll love this week's edition of the Denver Boot. After the jump we posted the set in its entirety -- well, minus a little editing on our part, in which we clipped the false start at the beginning of one of the songs -- for free download. Thanks to our pal and freque

Behold our latest weekly feature: Moving Pictures. Like a slideshow, only with sound and motion, Moving Pictures is basically just a quick highlight reel of the things we saw during the week or, in this case, over the weekend. This first edition features clips from yet another extraordinary weekend for music in the Mile High City. While we didn't make it to all the gigs we had hoped for, we did manage to catch a number of stellar sets all over town, including Iuengliss on Friday night at the h

  • Ghost Buffalo gives up the ... well, ghost

Allow us to make this semi dreary Friday a little drearier. We just received word that one of our favorite bands (yes, we know we have a lot of favorite bands) is about to expire. It seems Ghost Buffalo, we're saddened to report, has reached its natural end. The outfit is slated to play two final shows before hanging it up for good -- one at 3 Kings Tavern on Tuesday, May 12, with Eyes and Ears, Bryan Hartley and Sonic Vomit, and another on Thursday, May 14, at the Rocket Room in Colorado Spring

Welcome to a special edition of Moving Pictures. We got a head start on the weekend last night, and oh, man, what a night we had! We're still recovering from it, in fact, as we write this, trying to replenish our electrolytes and all that. We finally experienced the night we'd all been looking forward to since it was announced, the members of the Micro Wrestling Federation making their highly anticipated debut at 3 Kings Tavern. Calling it the coolest freaking thing we've ever seen wouldn't com

  • Last night (well, yesterday): Dr. Know at Wax Trax

So before its show last night with the Freeze and Pitch Invasion at 3 Kings Tavern, Nardcore legends Dr. Know played an especially sweaty, late afternoon, show gratis in the back room of Wax Trax. We stopped by and as you can see from the picture above of Brian Hagman from Black Lamb, we were among a cast of other faithful devotees who knocked off early yesterday to catch the set. See the show through the lens of Jon Solomon.
