  • Irony free disco at Problems D'Amour tonight

DJs Boyhollow and Max Klaw are kicking off a monthly all-disco party tonight at the Walnut Room, but before you break out that white jumpsuit and faux-Saturday Night Fever shuffle, you need to know this is not about the irony. "We think this music deserves a real forum for expression and for people to learn about it as a valid and important music form," Boyhollow explains.

  • Spinning the Wheel

photo: Eryc EylI had the pleasure and delight to DJ last Wednesday at the Larimer Lounge with some absolute luminaries among Denver's deck wreckers: DJ Ginger, DJ Klaw and the one and only Tyler Snow. The extremely talented Klaw mans the Thursday night Mommy's Little Monster party at Bender's Tavern, with El Brian, Deftron and various guests, and he also takes that party to Las Vegas, San Francisco, New York and elsewhere regularly. Ginger, who frequently joins the Mommy's Little Monster ga

  • The Jukebox Effect

Photo: Claudia LopezI deejayed a Valentine's Day party at the Horseshoe Lounge on Saturday. The bar had a great vibe, as always, and the ample crowd was in the mood for a good party. It was the first time I ever had to play music for four and a half straight hours, and I was initially worried that I would: a) run out of songs I wanted to play, or b) not have the right music to keep the party going. I underestimated both the strength of my music collection and the self-sustaining power of a party

  • The Fray still in Top 10 on Billboard 200

In its fifth consecutive week on the charts, the Fray's self-titled sophomore release is still generating impressive sales figures, good enough, in fact, to remain in the top ten on the Billboard 200. Last week, the group registered 30,000 more sales, which moved it up a notch to number seven from number eight the week previously. The acts in front of the Fray: U2, Taylor Swift, Neko Case, Lady Gaga, Nickelback and, uh, Jamie Foxx.

  • 3OH!3 nominated for VMA for Best New Artist

Props to 3OH!3. Adding to its global ubiquity, the Boulder-based act was nominated as Best New Artist at this year's MTV Video Music Awards. From the looks of it, the hooligans from the People's Republic have a viable shot of taking home honors, as the competition doesn't seem to be too stiff this year -- the duo's up against Asher Roth, Drake, Kid Cudi and Lady Gaga. Although, if anyone's going to take out the pair, smart money's on the lady of the bunch. Awards will be broadcast on MTV on S

  • Over the Weekend: Warped Tour at Invesco Field at Mile High

Breathe Carolina Warped Tour Invesco Field at Mile High August 9, 2009 Fifteen years down the line, the Warped Tour, which took over the asphalt surrounding Invesco Field on Sunday, has a well-established formula: lots of bands (around seventy in Denver), most of them falling into the pop-punk or post-punk categories, on multiple stages (seven yesterday), for a reasonable price (around fifty bucks after service charges) made possible by the presence of more food and merchandise booths th

  • MP3 Freeloader: Dubstep mix from Zeno

Some musical styles click for me right away; others take repeated exposures before I get it. Dubstep falls into the latter category for me, but the more I hear of it, the more I dig it. Something about the combination of the tricky rhythms built around jungle and dub influenced production and the frequently minimalist aesthetic really just started clicking for me. Select tracks have already wormed their way deep into my consciousness but it wasn't until this weekend I found a mix that I c

  • Channel 31 stars go from anchors to skank-ers

Libby Weaver and Natalie Tysdal prepare to get their freak on. Click to enlarge the photo, as well as a certain part of your anatomy, dudes. The folks at Denver Magazine call their September edition "The Men's Issue," and no wonder. The two women on the cover are literally busting out of their flirtatious attire, with the girliest of the two wearing a breast-boosting garment that turns her wiggle rack into an awesome blossom. Meanwhile, her more masculine partner is clad in an open shirt f

  • Music as a weapon: Make it stop for chrissakes! This is torture, man.

SoKabs (via Flickr)Did you see this yet? We just caught a link to this on Twitter (thanks, MyBodySings), a list of artists whose music was used "during the detention and interrogation of" to torture "prisoners at Guantanamo and other US facilities"? The list, published by the National Security Archive and reportedly culled from recently declassified documents, contains an range of music, from the Barney Theme Song and Meow Mix Jingle to Limp Bizkit and Matchbox Twenty. We see where they're go

  • Hearsay bits: Sean Foreman and Nat Motte put the 'OH!' in 3OH!3 at mtvU's Woodie Awards and more

Some quick news bites from the local scene...Oh my!: Recognize these striking dames? Yeah, us neither. That boa helmet and weird, red, veil, feathery thing kind of obscures any chance we have any sort of face recognition. This pic was snapped a few nights ago at mtvU's Woodie Awards, which we somehow managed to miss. Luckily, the fine folks over at network went ahead and solved the mystery for us. Evidently dudes looking like ladies here are none other than the insatiable hooligans from the P
