  • No Mile Hi-Fidelity tonight

Just a quick heads-up: Mile Hi-Fidelity will not be airing this week. Sparing you a lengthy explaination, let's just say that Andy and I are otherwise committed. Years before we launched the show, we were asked to host this bridge tournament at a retirement community in Lakewood. Being that we can't make it tonight because of that, and the fact that we didn't want to leave our faithful listeners hanging, we made some calls to our hockey bros and asked them if they wanted to, like, play a hockey

Because what Lakewood needs is a big new helping of new subdivisions, with a side of repressed speech. (Lakewood Edge) Something for which Democrats can be thankful: A Republican lobbyist has thrown his hat in the ring for governor, and his hat is stuffed with dirty money. (Colorado Pols) An ode to Harkness Heights. Because every neighborho

  • Colorado Crimes: Watch your wallets and purses in Lakewood, Boulder

A suspect in a Boulder identity-theft case. Yesterday, the police departments in Lakewood and Boulder put out warnings about wallet thefts within minutes of each other. Seventeen wallet thefts have taken place in Lakewood since February 1, while Boulder is looking for purse snatchers in two specific incidents. A photo of the first Boulder-area suspect is seen here; a shot of the second can be seen after the jump, along with the respective releases.

A little jaunt through the local blogosphere. Direct tips here. If a former congressmen runs for governor and there's no one around to cover the announcement, is he an idiot? • Not-So-New-Urbanism: Belmar

The Congress for the New Urbanism is holding its annual conference in Denver June 10-14, complete with bus tours of our most well-known new urbanist enclaves. But how do you judge walkable, neighborhood-based developments? Is it by the diversity (or lack thereof) of their residents, the number of parks nearby, their stumbling distance to a local watering hole? Over the next few days, we'll explore and judge -- oh yes, judge -- six of these developments and find out for sure just which is the m

  • Hey, drunk drivers: Get busted here tonight

The "100 Days of Heat" campaign, in which local police agencies step up their efforts to put drunk drivers behind bars before they can kill anyone, is in full force this weekend in at least a couple of local municipalities. Lakewood is announcing a handful of sobriety checkpoints to be put in place tonight, while Boulder wants boozers too stupid to take a cab to know they'll be offering free breath tests Saturday night into Sunday morning. • Paying off the GI Bill in Lakewood

Got your three grand right here. The GI Bill is our nation's way of thanking veterans for their sacrifices -- and those sacrifices continue. Specifically, some of the education benefits intended to help vets attend college haven't shown up yet -- and, in case you haven't noticed, school's been in session for quite a while now. Things have gotten so bad for some former soldiers that the Department of Veterans Affairs is inviting impacted students to visit field offices around the country --

  • No need to call the fire department about that house fire in Lakewood -- because they set it

A Flickr photoDon't be alarmed. Everything is under control. I sense that sometime this afternoon, a vacant house near 14th and Wadsworth in Lakewood will burst into flame. I base this prediction on intuition, cosmic vibrations and an announcement from West Metro Fire Fighters that they'll be conducting training exercises in the area from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. today and most of the day tomorrow if the weather cooperates (which it probably won't, unless every forecaster in the city is wrong --

  • Top five excuses for flying drunk

"Everything looks fine from here -- although my seat belt seems a little tight..." United pilot Erwin Washington, a former Air Force Academy basketball standout who currently makes his home in Lakewood, has been busted in London for allegedly flying drunk. Don't know if the crew member who turned him in did so because he wouldn't pass the bottle. Whatever the case, Washington's clearly got some explaining to do. Here's five excuses he might try floating: 5. "I always drink Red Bull to st
