  • Gary Isaacs releases book of Slim Cessna's Auto Club photos

Denver-based photographer Gary Isaacs has just unveiled a 78-page collection of photographs of one of this city's best-loved bands, Slim Cessna's Auto Club. The book includes some truly striking black-and-white on- and off-stage shots of Slim, Munly and the gang from the past few years, as well as snippets of Auto Club lyrics. You can get a glimpse of the book and pick up a copy from Isaacs's website. Copies will also be available on the band's July tour, including a stop at the Larimer Lou

  • Flaming Lips, Modest Mouse, Frank Black shows annouced

The Flaming Lips know all about putting on a hell of a show, and the Monolith Festival gig at Red Rocks in 2007 was one most phenomenal things to happen to that venue in the last few years. Lets hope for a repeat performance when the Lips return to Red Rocks Sunday, August 23 with Explosions in the Sky and Star Death & the White Dwarfs, which features Wayne Coyne's nephew Dennis. Tickets, which run from $36.75 to $46.50, go on sale Saturday, June 20 at 10 a.m. And as an added bonus, all tick

Fresh off the performance at the Westword Music Showcase this past weekend and little more than a week before the release of Broadcast, their major label debut, the men of Meese have premiered their video for their first single, "Next In Line." There's three versions of the performance driven clip, which feature prominent cameos by Rodney T. Davis, otherwise known to rank and file, mass transit-using Denverites as the friendly, neighborhood RTD, and the Larimer Lounge exterior. Check the video

Tom MurphyHere We Go Magic, Vitamins and Achille Lauro Sunday, June 28, 2009 Larimer Lounge Better Than: A straightforward interpretation of a band's album. This show opened with Denver's own Vitamins. Since coming to the Mile High City from Greeley two years ago, it seems Vitamins have shed a bit of the sunny and innocent sound that characterized much of its earlier material. Instead of hurting the band, I think the outfit wears the darker, slightly grittier sound well. A decided power and driv

Kiernan MaletskyWhite Rabbits. They're definitely white. Not very rabbit-y, though. If, like me, you sat around all weekend salivating over the U.S.-Brazil soccer game before realizing as you watched it that you still don't care about soccer and likely never will, well, you missed this stuff: White Rabbits rocked the Bluebird, and stole our reviewer's heart (again). Here We Go Magic did the same at Larimer Lounge. And Westword joined LikeMe.net in partying with DJ Sophia Lin at Suite Two Hund

  • Missed connection: Discount Cinema and Joy Subtraction

Even the lowliest of local bands are used to getting a little groupie action now and then. But it turns out Denver-area musicians don't need to sift through their adoring audiences for a shot at romance; sometimes it's right there onstage. Emily Carter, bassist of Lakewood electro-rock outfit Discount Cinema, recently placed a Missed Connections listing on Craigslist after playing a Larimer Lounge BBQ show on July 12 with Fort Collins' Joy Subtraction (a new group, no website or MySpace yet,

Photo by Andy MellenCongratulations are due to the fine young men of the Epilogues. For the second year in a row, the band is one of the winners of the Ernie Ball battle of the bands, earning them a coveted slot on that stage for this Sunday's Warped Tour date at Invesco. The time slot has yet to be nailed down but the band says it will probably between noon and 2:30 if you want to catch them. And if you can't make it to Warped Tour (those tickets ain't cheap, and there is some kind of r

Abe Brennan during his Wretch Like Me DaysColorado might not necessarily need another supergroup, but it's hard to argue with a lineup like that of Joy Subtraction. The new trio comprises singer/guitarist Abe Brennan (formerly of Wretch Like Me and The Things They Carry), bassist Matt Regan (formerly of Matson Jones) and drummer Brian Polk (formerly of The Gravity Index and Ghost Buffalo). • The Denver Boot: Hot IQs final show at Larimer Lounge

Without question, Hot IQs, which took the stage for the last time this past weekend at the Larimer Lounge, made its mark on the Mile High City and will be sorely missed. Starting life as the Royal We, the outfit grew ably into its own as songwriters and left us with a slew of outstanding songs, from "Firecracker" to "Duck and Cover" to "Iggy Pop" to "Houndstooth," just to name a few. Those who attended the act's farewell show at the Bluebird this past June were treated to exhilarating renditi

Yes, we know we already posted a Denver Boot this week -- earlier today in fact. Consider this one a bonus. See, our buddy Lance from the Flat Response had this great recording of a Larimer Lounge set from this past May from Yuzo Nieto and the Hand that Rocks the Dreidel hanging around that he hadn't posted it to his site yet. So of course, when we caught wind, we jumped at the chance to bless you with it. So what are you waiting for? Get your download on after the jump.

Last night on I-25 as Del the Funky Homosapien (aka Teren Delvon Jones) and his crew were making their way up from Colorado Springs to Denver for a scheduled show tonight at the Larimer Lounge, an Escalade reportedly driven by a drunk driver rear ended the crew. Nonetheless, we've got a bunch of tickets for some shows tonight that will hopefully help ease some of the pre-winter blues. First up, is Meshell Ndegeocello at the Boulder Theater. • Q&A with Dick Valentine of Electric Six

Electric Six have been bringing the party to the unwary for six albums in as many years, starting with 2003's Fire and leading up to the brand-new Kill. The group's songs combine '80s rock, disco and New Wave into a cranked-up, ultra-catchy sound all its own, with lyrics that mix a David Lee Roth-esque bravado with surreal barrages of imagery revolving around fire, sex, dancing...and air travel. Frontman Dick Valentine comes across like a smarmy cross between Mike Patton and a Baptist preache
