  • Jonesy's EatBar gets a new (old) chef

Just got word from Leigh Jones that Jonesy's EatBar, her "gastropub" at 400 East 20th Avenue, has lost chef Mike "Waldo" Walden due to undisclosed circumstances (meaning something unsavory, no doubt). But she didn't have to look far for a replacement: She's hired back one of her old sous chefs from Brasserie Rouge, Matt Brown.  Oddly enough, Brown also did time at the Painted Bench (in the space now occupied by Jonesy's, and before that Jones's Dish Bistro). So this is

  • Colt & Gray, a new gastropub, slated for May

Where the hell is it?I asked myself that question a half dozen times while aimlessly driving down Platte Street searching for Colt & Gray, a new gastropub opening in late May at 1553 Platte Street in the Platte River Valley. Lori MidsonIt wasn't that I couldn't find the address: The numbers were right there, clear as day, tacked above the door...of an office building -- the old "Zang" building, to be precise, which is now New Town Builders. After several jaunts up and down the stairs of said

  • Noca is no go

Back in December, Robert Thompson (formerly of Brasserie Rouge, the Atomic Cowboy and B-52 Billiards) announced that his Chicago company, Seasoned Development, would open its first Noca Kitchen at 1433 17th Street in Denver. "Noca Kitchen is going to be a substantial growth vehicle for us in Denver, as well as the rest of the country," Thompson said at the time of the gourmet-fast concept. Don't know how fast it will catch on in the rest of the country, but Noca is now a no-go on 17th, and that

  • Argyll opens today

Just got word that Argyll is opening today in the former home of the Squealing Pig, 2700 East Third Avenue. It's brought to us by Robert Thompson, best known for Brasserie Rouge, our Best New Restaurant of 2004. Sadly, Brasserie Rouge didn't last (its space in the Icehouse will soon become the Icehouse Tavern), but now we have Argyll, a "gastropub."According to Argyll's website, "'GastroPub' is a British term for a 'public house' that specializes in high-quality food. The term derives from gastr

  • Eatin' good in the neighborhood: Jonesy's EatBar

Leigh Jones and Matt Brown at Jonesy's EatBarStepping through the doors for the first time--into the onetime soda fountain, now brushed and polished and kitted out as a very comfortable and welcoming neighborhood bar, with white-washed tin ceilings and chandeliers--I told myself that no matter what Jonesy's calls itself or its food, a galley ought to be able to stand on its own and cook the hell out of anything on its menu.  Good food is good food, period. What Jonesy's was calling itself wa

  • The List: No, I'll just eat at the bar...

Leigh Jones and Matt Brown at Jonesy's, Denver's first gastropub.Gastropub, gastropub, gastropub... This week's Cafe section was all about gastropubs and my intense dislike of the term. So this week's list is simple: my favorite places where it's just better to eat at the bar, places that would never think about calling themselves gastropubs. No knock againt their dining areas, but sometimes a man just wants to have a quiet moment alone with his cheeseburgers and whiskey.1) Bones, 701 Grant Stre

  • Live nude girls (well, almost...)

Want to know one of the things I love about Jonesy's EatBar?  It serves amazing bowls of perfect french fries with a bacon-studded macaroni and cheese bechamel. Want to know one of the other reasons I love it?  Owner Leigh Jones's staff is willing to get (almost) naked for a good cause.  They did it a few months ago with the release of a pin-up calendar where the staff stripped down to their skivvies and tattoos to benefit Metro Denver Partners.  And now they're doing it

See more of Lori Midson's photos at westword.com/slideshow. While I didn't buy the shirt straight off the bartender's back at last night's feel-good Share Our Strength-Taste of the Nation fundraiser at Jonesy's EatBar, the rowdy (in all the good ways) gastropub at 400 East 20th Avenue, I did purchase a fresh-from-the-pile T-shirt, which was designed by local tattoo inker Josh Ford, who happens to be the guy that tats Matt Selby, exec chef at Vesta Dipping Grill and Steuben's, and the chef chai

  • New blood at Jonesy's EatBar

Staying on the menu...forever Just got off the blower with Leigh Jones from Jonesy's EatBar (a self-proclaimed gastropub that I loved despite the label when I reviewed it back in May a>), and she let me know that things are again changing over at her half-eponymous restaurant. Chef Matt Brown, who came on late last year, is out and chef Brendan Doyle (most recently ex of Campo de Fiore) started up in his place last night. What had inspired this change? "Kinda the same thing that always

  • The new chef at Jonesy's EatBar loves the word "gastropub"

Lori MidsonBrendon Doyle, the new exec chef at Jonesy's EatBar"I love the gastropub concept, I love the word 'gastropub' and I love Leigh Jones," declares Brendon Doyle, the former exec chef of Campo de Fiori who's now in command of the kitchen at Jonesy's EatBar, the gastropub at 400 East 20th Avenue, as Jason Sheehan reports here. Doyle didn't actually actually mention Sheehan's recent gastropub rant out loud, but he did say that his own cooking philosophies jive with the gastropub mo

Nancy LevineLeigh Jones, behind the bar at Jonesy's EatBar.Leigh Jones, the woman behind Jonesy's EatBar and the Horseshoe Lounge (with partner Margaret Moore), was also the co-owner and designer of the Dish, B-52 Billiards, Brasserie Rouge, Atomic Cowboy and Buffalo Billiards in Nashville and Austin. But she really came into her own with the eponymous Jonesy's, Denver's first official gastropub. Now serving: Leigh Jones. How does the bar fit in with your vision of the restaurant? My vi
