Soren McCartyLeonard Cohen Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Morrison Thursday, June 4, 2009 Better Than: Cohen probably was fifteen years ago. Something must have happened to Leonard Cohen these past several years, because the performance the man gave on Thursday was stronger, more confident and even better developed than he has often sounded on his records. At the outset, the ten-piece group, including Cohen, were dressed in dark colors and many were wearing hats. The show began immediately with "Dance

  • Q&A with Elizabeth Zilman of Elizabeth & the Catapult

Elizabeth & the Catapult is a Brooklyn-based trio playing the kind of jazz-inflected pop music that is simultaneously soothing and thought provoking. The act's debut album, Tall Children, bears favorable comparison to the more adventurous pop songwriters of recent years like Suzanne Vega and Tori Amos. As a live band, Elizabeth & the Catapult are equal parts charismatic jazz lounge act and spirited indie pop band with pleasantly unexpected twists and turns during the set. We had a cha

  • Making music eventful

Soren McCartyMost years, I make it up to Red Rocks for just one show. It has to be a real occasion -- something to make it worth the drive, the parking, the overpriced beers and the difficulty of escaping once the show is over. Two years ago, I made the journey for Ozomatli, and I left when the headliner, Los Lonely Boys, launched into its onanistic set. Last year, it was Daft Punk, I think. This year, I thought Leonard Cohen was going to be the one show worth the hassle -- one beautiful, mag

  • Over the weekend: Bat for Lashes at the Bluebird Theater

Doug BeamBat For Lashes, Other Lives Bluebird Theater Saturday, August 22, 2009 Better Than: See bands with technical ability but no imagination. Openers Other Lives started out with a lush, orchestral, folk-inflected pop song that reminded me a bit of Arab Strap, without the bile and the Scottish accents. It would have been easy to write Other Lives off as yet another adherent to the Radiohead school of atmospheric music but something about the band's songs went beyond something so obvious.

  • Beckstra! Beckstra! Have you heard about Beck's record club?

All right, have y'all heard about this one yet? Beck's record club? Just stumbled upon this one ourselves. Evidently, El Guero Loco and his cronies -- an ever shifting lineup which includes Nigel Godrich, Devendra Banhart, Ben Goldwasser and Andrew Van Wyngarden from MGMT, Andrew Stockdale from Wolfmother, Binki Shapiro from Little Joy and Giovanni Ribisi (?), among others -- has embarked on an intriguing little project that involves them recording a classic album in a day with no rehearsal.

  • Heavy Rotation, our top spins for the week of October 26, 2009

As music critics, the most common question we get asked (and ask each other, for that matter) is, "What are you listening to?" The pervasiveness of this query is precisely what inspired Heavy Rotation, our latest feature. For the benefit of those who happen to be curious, we've compiled a list of all the things we're listening to this week. Feel free to chime in with picks of your own after the jump.
