  • Mile High Makeout: Dreaming of Me

As Matthew Wilder once said, "Last night, I had the strangest dream." I was at some sort of educational and/or military compound, and in the main dining hall there was a musical performance. My friend, a local photographer, was with me, and we were excited about the show. In some ways, it could have been any Friday night at one of my favorite Denver venues, but this space was large, and it was not unlike the mess hall in MASH. When it came time for the show, it turned out it was the Killers, except, as dream logic would have it, this band looked nothing like the Killers.

  • Mile High Makeout: Binge and purge

On the third day of an alcohol, caffeine, fat and sugar binge in the name of the winter solstice and some folks' savior, I'm feeling lethargic, unhealthy, dirty and startlingly unattractive. This is the stuff New Year's resolutions are made of. All I want to do is eat raw foods, spend four hours in the gym and try to save my internal organs from becoming completely enrobed in a protective layer of sweet, fatty tissue. In spite of all that, I'm going tonight. And you probably should too.

  • Mile Hi-Fidelity playlist - 01.07.09

It was world premier week on Mile Hi-Fidelity. Last night, we had the pleasure of debuting songs from A Shoreline Dream, Jon Snodgrass, Littles Paia, Park Pourbaix and the Widowers' Mike Marchant, who stopped by the studio long enough to give us insight on his new batch of tunes, which will be unveiled to the world at large this Friday night at the Meadowlark, to regale us with an unbelievable tale about getting arrested and shook down in Mexico, and to get stuck in the elevator. That's right.

  • Mile High Makeout: New EP from Dualistics

Thanks to the ever-gracious Charley Hine, I've had the opportunity to listen to the new six-track disc from Dualistics a handful of times this week, and I have to say it's really freaken good. I have publicly expressed my dissatisfaction with the band's live performances in the past, but if Hine and his bandmates - Scott Russell, Tyler Despres and the ubiquitous Jimmy Stofer - can reproduce the energy and complexity of this record when they release it at the Larimer Lounge on January 31st (with

  • Widowers live on the (Internet) radio

Just received word that psych-pop magicians Widowers are making an appearance on KVDU, the University of Denver's college radio station (wait, DU has a college radio station? Who knew?). Tune in to your Internet -- it appears that KVDU is an Internet-only radio station (sorry commuters!) from 4 to 6 p.m. today to catch a live acoustic set in the studio from frontman Mike Marchant and a few of his cohorts. Click here to find info about KDVU and tune in to the show.

Just received word that the five members of Houses will be roaming around on the 16th Street Mall tonight, playing guitars, singing and entertaining the mall-walking troops. While we're not entirely sure which five members of Houses will be on hand -- the act is comprised of Andrew James Hamilton, Kinsey Hamilton, Stephen Brooks, Matthew Till, Johnny Lundock, Maria Kohler, Eric Peterson and Mike Marchant -- you can bet the music will be sweet. The roving musical marauders plan to meet in front o

  • Mike Marchant gives away unreleased music

Towering rocker and singer-songwriter Mike Marchant has a well-documented penchant for giving away music. When his band, Widowers, released its debut album, Marchant couldn't give away copies of the painstakingly recorded beauty fast enough. Little has changed since then, as evidenced by a recent e-mail the psych-pop tunesmith sent. The message contained links to download a handful of Widowers and Marchant solo tracks, as well as an exhortation to share liberally. One of those tracks is a concis

Got plans this weekend? If not, you do now. There's a couple of shows totally worth checking out featuring local musicians paying homage to a pair of past icons, groundbreaking, paradigm shifting artists who left this world violently and prematurely. • MP3 Freeloader: tonight, Tim Pourbaix CD release at Larimer Lounge

As you've undoubtedly gathered by now if you've read this week's items on Tim Pourbaix, in Rough Mixes and the extended companion piece on the blog, tonight will mark one of the singer-songwriter's last local performances as a resident of Denver. Pourbaix has made quite a mark on this town as an artist, and suffice it to say, we're sad to see him go. In honor of his CD release party tonight at the Larimer Lounge -- which will feature a solo performance from Pourbaix, as well as a set from Park P

Another fun show last night. Andy was back from tour and as things worked out, we didn't have any guests, which meant less talk and more rock. In homage to Hot IQs, who recently announced their impending split, we kicked off the show with three back-to-back songs from the group, followed by our well wishes for a speedy recovery to Mike Marchant and a track from his latest record, and twenty-two more hand-picked local tracks -- including the broadcast debut of tunes by Vonnegut, Tyler Ward, Forth

  • Widowers' Mike Marchant recovering after being hit by car

Andrew SegretiTo say Mike Marchant has an angel resting on his shoulder is an understatement on par with saying our economy is sort of a bad way right now. Yesterday, Marchant, one of Denver's most talented songwriters, was hit by a car and managed to walk away from the incident having only suffered a concussion -- his second within a year and a half -- a sore arm and some minor scrapes and bruises. The first head injury was more severe and happened at the beginning of last year. When we profile

From the soggy, cold weather to being under, uh, well, the weather until today -- which, incidentally, also accounts for why this week's episode of Moving Pictures wasn't posted until today -- it was a pretty miserable weekend. Fortunately, the music was delightful, as always, which more than made up for things. See what we saw after the jump.

Yerkish, 12 p.m. The crowd inside the cramped cantina is building slowly as Yerkish takes the stage, and the band wastes no time in laying out its frenetic, frantic rhythms. It's a dynamic complimented by lead singer Tim Kaminski's impassioned, insistent vocals and the clean, driving guitar lines of Nate Huisgen and Tony Brown. The group's sound draws from multiple sources at once, easily in

Ah, now here's an idea we can co-sign. Just received word from Mike Marchant (Widowers, Houses) alerting us to a rad new idea he's about to execute, a songwriter's workshop at the Meadowlark. Dubbed as "Dissecting and Perfecting the Pop Song - A Songwriter's Workshop," the sessions are slated to take place on the first and third Mondays of the month, beginning Monday, October 19, and will be moderated by the Widowers frontman, a guy who, without question, knows his way around a tune. It was seriously snowing out on Saturday, hard enough to cover the signs and turn the city into a giant hushed bobsled track.
