Photo: Aaron ThackerayAndrew Bird, Lonely DearThursday, February 26, 2009Ogden TheaterBetter than: Having a good show ruined by an obnoxious audience.Andrew Bird's stage entrance at the Ogden Thursday night boasted all the careful ceremony and staid splendor of a religious rite. His fast establishment of a dynamic stage presence and quick offering of impressively calculated and nuanced music had much to do with the feeling. But the collective response of the sold-out audience seemed to help esta

  • The Fray to perform at Mile High Music Festival

Those on the Fray's mailing list may have noticed that Denver was conspicuously missing from the act's exhaustive list of upcoming tour dates this summer. Rumor had it this was due to the fact that the band was going to be performing at the Mile High Music Fest. Well, that rumor has now been confirmed. Although we're still awaiting word on the rest of the line-up, we just received confirmation that the act will indeed be appearing at the fest on Sunday, July 19.

  • Westword exclusive: The Fray's not-so-secret dress rehearsals -- in pictures

Rod BlackhurstBy now you may have heard about the Fray's "dress rehearsal," as it's being called, this weekend. The band has been running through its live show all week at Broomfield Events Center in preparation for its summer tour, which kicks off next Friday in Atlanta. The week's worth of rehearsals will be culminating with a private (read: closed to the public, invite-only) rehearsal this weekend for friends, family and their friends and family's friends and family -- because the band wants

  • Set Forth changes name to the Northern Way

Just received word that Set Forth has officially changed its name to the Northern Way. We spoke with frontman Steve Melton a short time ago, and he says that the move was prompted by the fact that there are several other acts are currently using the same moniker. The act, which was included in our Class of 2008 and whose song "Crazy" has been getting major spins on KTCL as of late, thought it wise to make the change at this stage of its career rather than down the road, just in case the band sta

3OH!3 has officially achieved ubiquity. The duo performed live yesterday on MTV's It's On with Alexa Chung. The guys are featured among people.com's hottest bachelors. Oh, and in actual music news, "Don't Trust Me" has reached the number five spot on Billboard's top 40 chart. As the Boulder ballers -- due at this year's Mile High Music Festival in addition to embarking on another go round on the Warped Tour, followed by a slot at the Reading & Leeds festival in late August --

Soren McCartyYesterday, Mile High Music Festival officials released schedule for this year's two-day concert event on the grounds of Dick's Sporting Goods Park. From the looks of it, there's been some substantial changes from last year, the most notable being the addition of another main stage on the east side of the field, which will be divided from the main stage on the west by the food and vendor area. There's three additional performance areas this year, including the First Bank Stage, Rhaps

  • The Fray's Joe King collaborates with American Idol winner Kris Allen

In between dates on his band's current tour (which will be making its Denver stop next weekend at the Mile High Music Festival), Fray singer/guitarist Joe King found some time to hit to hit the studio with Kris Allen, the winner of last season's American Idol, to record an as-yet-titled song for the latter's debut platter. MTV recently caught up with King, who was in the studio in Toronto mixing the rough demo, and he explained that the pair hooked up with little fanfare after Allen -- who had e

Although acts such as Tool, Widespread Panic and the Fray are clearly the main draw at this weekend's Mile High Music Festival, it's support bands like Band of Heathens, slated to perform on Saturday, that demonstrate the prodigious depth of the fest's lineup. Boiling down Band of Heathens sound to a short sound bite is a fool's errand thanks to the band's vast library of musical influences, from the smooth R&B crooning of Sam Cooke to the southern fried rock of the Allman Brothers. It's been a few weeks since our last 3OH!3 post. (Forgive us, father, for we have sinned.) Fortunately, you'll be happy to know that the Boulder-based hooligans, slated to appear at this weekend's Mile High Music Festival, haven't budged from their ubiquitous perch. And their influence appears to be widening. (Anybody notice Shwayze copping a 3OH!3 vibe on its new single, "Get U Home"?) In an industry littered with tween pop stars and Disney Channel minions, it's refreshing to come across an artist whose work isn't a medley of foot-tapping drivel swathed with AutoTune. Equipped with awe-inducing guitar skills and a hauntingly intense wail, 22-year-old Davy Knowles is quickly making a name for himself in the world of Blues. • Mile High Music Festival Q&A: Incubus

Incubus was three-fifths of the way formed back in high school in California twenty years ago. Safe to say the band had no idea how popular its music would be - the group has three platinum albums in the US, and two of those went platinum twice. Born in the alternative boom of the early '90s, Incubus set themselves apart with a slower tempo and world-music instruments -- and by being sad while their counterparts insisted on being angry. Drummer Jose Pasillas was neither sad nor angry when we

Averaging 200 shows every year for the past eight years, the members of Pepper have earned a reputation for being as dedicated as they are hedonistic.  With five full-length albums under their belt and the development of their own record label, the Hawaiian-bred members have demonstrated an intense love for music that can only be rivaled by their love for surfboards and Jagermeister. Blending the organic harmonies of reggae with the melodic undertones of pop-rock, the outfit has produced a

When 3OH!3 formed, we'll bet that that they never imagined they'd a) have the number one song in the country, and b) that they'd be leaving Ryan Seacrest a voice mail that he would then play across this great land on his weekly Americas Top 40 show. But that's exactly where the dudes find themselves right now (although Mediabase lists them at number five this week) hot on the heels of their blistering set at the Mile High Music Festival.
