The set started with electro-metallic drums and minimal keyboard atmospherics weaving into a sonic tapestry of plaintive vocals, gen

  • Q&A with Ryan Hendrix of Colourmusic

My first interview with Ryan Hendrix, one of the co-founders of Oklahoma's Colourmusic, didn't happen for one reason or another. But he more than made up for it the second time around. He was incredibly generous with his time, and extremely interesting and honest, too. These qualities come through in our profile of the group, timed to advance its December 17 headlining appearance at the hi-dive, as well as the massive Q&A accessible below.

  • A Shoreline Dream becoming a reality

Everything is still coming up roses these days for A Shoreline Dream. After roaring out of the gate in 2006, wisely aligning itself with Paste and Filter Magazines and Urban Outfitters, to then earning a nod in Urb's Next 100 issue last spring and collaborating with Ulrich Schnauss, the act has made all the right moves. Considering that frontman Ryan Policky literally mortgaged his future on the band, it's not surprising to see that he's ensured that everything about the band, from the packagi

  • My Bloody Valentine show announced

It was a hell of a big deal when My Bloody Valentine reunited last year after a sixteen-year hiatus for gigs in London, Europe, Japan and America, including the Coachella festival in Indio, California, and the All Tommorow's Parties festival in New York. In addition to playing Coachella again, the shoegaze pioneers will play four other American dates that include a stop at the Fillmore on Friday, April 24. Tickets are $39.50 and go on sale Saturday, March 14 at 10 a.m.

  • Heavy Rotation, our top five spins for the week of April 13, 2009

As music critics, the most common question we get asked (and ask each other, for that matter) is, "What are you listening to?" The pervasiveness of this query is precisely what inspired Heavy Rotation, our latest feature. For the benefit of those who happen to be curious, we've compiled a list of all the things we're listening to this week. Feel free to chime in with your own picks after the jump.

  • Fell to appear on upcoming soundtrack

The shoegaze narcopop of Fell will be appearing on the soundtrack for The Deepest Blue, an upcoming movie from first-time writer/director Dustin Lane, slated to release in 2010. Fell member Bryan Romero reports that Lane found the band on MySpace, looking for some appropriately "sad music for a sad movie" -- which, given Fell's languid melancholia, sounds like a perfect fit. How many songs and which ones is yet to be determined, but Romero says the director is considering a number of tracks fro

  • Moving Pictures: Casselman's Bar & Venue, MBV, Autumn Film, Primasonic, Maris the Great, Adai, To Be Eaten and Dualistics

'Twas yet another sensational weekend for music in the MHC. Kicked the weekend off by having a few drinks at Casselman's Bar & Venue on Walnut, the latest addition to the Ballpark neighborhood -- or as owner Matt Casselman prefers, "NoDo." The place has tons of potential thanks to an attached thousand-person capacity concert hall. From there, we packed our earplugs and headed to My Bloody Valentine at the Fillmore, which, unsurprisingly, was a veritable who's who of the scene. We caught up w

Photo: Brooke BullardIn this week's Rough Mixes entry focusing on Napalm Death, we only printed highlights of Tom Murphy's recent conversation with Barney Greenway. The two of them actually had a fairly extensive conversation in which Greenway discussed the influence of My Bloody Valentine and other unexpected acts on Napalm Death, how the act has managed to maintain the ferocious level of intensity over the years that the outfit has become known for and more. • Monolith Q&A: Depreciation Guild

Photo by Drew ReynoldsBrooklyn's the Depreciation Guild has spent the last few years fusing elements of synth pop, dream pop and experimental electronic music into an indistinguishable amalgamation of the band's wide-ranging sonic influences. In reviews and profiles of the band, much has been made of the group's use of an old piece of digital sound equipment (discussed below) but the Guild are not 8-bit composers nor are they neo-shoegazers trying to recreate a sound of times past. Photo by Leah MaupinUpdate 11/11/09: The full Brim Liski EP was released yesterday on Latenight Weeknight Records and is now available for download on iTunes for $5.99. We've just learned of a promising new group based here in Denver (with a connection to the Netherlands too, apparently). It's something of a local eclectic supergroup, comprising two members of other well-known and excellent acts that work in diverse styles. Mysterious, too -- they aren't revealing their identities to th

  • Top ten reunions we'd rather not see

Better Than Ezra There have been a lot of bands in the history of the universe and most of them, at one point or another, have broken up. Surprisingly, we've found the majority of them have reformed despite themselves. Another surprise is the amount of bands still playing -- Better Than Ezra, Seven Mary Three, the Troggs, and the Zombies -- despite their lack of a mass audience. Last week, we waxed on our dream reunions. This week, we offer up ten bands we think should just stay dead, for one
