  • Ho, ho, ho: Twigs has closed -- for now

Above is the season's greeting that Nancy Levine, our intrepid Drink of the Week columnist, found when she was out last night judging the 2008 Holiday Cocktail Competition. Seventeen restaurants -- all members of the Denver Independent Network of Restaurants -- had signed up to create special holiday drinks for this contest. But only sixteen of them are actually serving the drinks. Because as Nancy discovered when she made the trek down south to Tipsy's, the giant liquor s

  • miniBAR is a big deal for Cherry Creek

Nancy Levine Stopped in at Bill Ward's miniBAR Friday night, for an early look at the start of its grand-opening festivities. It's tucked below the old Village Inn at 2623 East Second Avenue. And although the place is tiny, it's definitely big on style.

  • The Maker's Mark Mint Julep: Delicious, and straight from the bottle how we like

Nancy LevineI stopped by Oceanaire (1400 Arapahoe) last night, and was served a Maker's Mark Mint Julep. The crazy part: This delicious cocktail was a pre-made mix, poured directly from the bottle. Maker's is distributing the drink in Colorado for the first time ever, and Oceanaire is one of the few places in town that's stocking it. But if you want to try it, you better hurry. It will only be sold by Maker's during the Triple Crown season, which ends June 6. Editor's note: You should probabl

  • Tequila twins take on California

Twins Will and Dave Elger, who were born in Mexico but are very much Denverites, worked in the tequila business for a decade before creating their own five years ago: Muchote Tequila. Nancy Levine first caught up with it last September at Lime XS, where she discovered it made a good mango margarita. "Muchote is an artisan tequila, and making tequila is an art," says Will. But the bottle should not be part of that art, as it is with so-called super-premium tequilas that retail for $70 to $80,

  • Prime time at Primebar

Nancy LevinePrimebar, the new restaurant in the old home of Palamino at 1515 Arapahoe Street, opened last month -- but it threw its big grand-opening bash, a benefit for Food Bank of the Rockies, last night. The very pretty space was packed with pretty people -- but looking even better than the clientele, or the very renovated space, was the new menu, which includes a "primetime" happy hour that runs from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and every day from 10 p.m. until midnight. View Westword.com's Map of the Bars in a larger map Because we are, by and large, a bunch of drunks, every week we feature at least one bar. One week, it's Drew Bixby braving some unchartered watering hole with his "Drunk of the Week." The next, it's Nancy Levine discovering some creatively poured, creatively named "Drink of the Week" in a usually (but not always) shinier establishment. We've been doing this for years, so we decided to throw together a map of all the places we've visited, with

  • Still alive after the first Denver Five

Nancy LevineJimmy Zanon's watermelon/chile margarita Last night I attended the first of a quintet of dinners coming from the Denver Five, the merry band of chefs who've represented Denver so ably by cooking at the renowned James Beard House in New York City the last two years. The group consists of Tyler Wiard (Elway's), Jamey Fader (Lola), Matt Selby (Vesta and Steuben's), Troy Guard (TAG) and Keegan Gerhard (D Bar Desserts), and I'm convinced that these chefs could take table scraps and mak

  • Where am I drinking?

Nancy LevineFiguring out where I'm drinking should be easy; there's a hint in the photo. Figuring out what will be harder, since you can't find this drink in any other Denver bar, although it's making a comeback on the East Coast. What is it -- and where?

  • Elway's/Matsuhisa shochu dinner so good

Nancy LevinePhilip Tanaka's yellowtail with jalapeno, cilantro and yuzu I hated the Curious Case of Benjamin Button. For a year the PR hype machine had told me how great it was going to be, and then everyone I know who saw it told me how great it was and how much I'd love it. So by the time I finally saw the movie, it could never match the hype surrounding it (I couldn't wait for him to die). I feared the same thing would happen when I walked into Elway's in Cherry Creek last night for

  • 231 Milwaukee back on the market...again

Nancy Levine The space at 231 Milwaukee Street that most recently held Bar Luxe and Euro is empty again -- except for all the ghosts. Over the last thirty years, this address has been home to everything from the Kiva (great green chile recipe) to the Bay Wolf to Vartan's Jazz to the Manhattan Grill. • Behind the Bar: Ky Belk of Elway's in Cherry Creek

Nancy Levine Ky Belk doesn't judge who's coming in the door at Elway's in Cherry Creek. His best tip was a thousand bucks one night from a guy wearing a Green Back Packers jersey. And while he won't say it, I'm sure that some of the flashiest people at the bar have forgotten how hard Ky works for them, day in and day out. Ty is one of a growing number of bartenders in town who isn't just slinging cocktails, but is considered a true mixologist. He's worked in restaurants since he was

This is part two of Nancy Levine's interview with Sean Kenyon, the bar manager at Steuben's. You can read the first part of Levine's interview with Kenyon here. What do you think of bartending school? I am not a believer in generic bartending school as a way to get into the business. I think that you need to pay your dues in a restaurant or bar and earn the opportunity to get behind the bar. That's where the practical training comes in and learning begins. I do believe in "higher bar edu

The Ginn Mill has two contestants in the Mix Master competition.Judge Nancy Levine, at your service. The bartending competition will come to order! Bartending competitions are one of the many things I love about the spirit industry (you don't see busboy competitions, do you?). And I particularly love judging them, watching bartenders perform their magic within the limitations of the rules, sometimes pushing those rules to delicious effect. So I can't wait to judge the DeKuyper Mix Ma

Nancy Levine Don't let the camera angle fool you. That's a GIGANTIC margarita, made with well tequila and sweet and sour straight out of a gallon jug. Is it delicious? Nope. Not even close. But this venue has been serving these golden jugs for years. And the crowds can't seem to get enough of them. And no, it's NOT the Rio. Can you guess where I'm drinking?

  • Amnesia wins the Mix Master Bartender contest, appropriately enough

Nancy LevineKen Kody, Mix MasterI took my judging job seriously during the DeKuyper Mix Master Bartender Contest at Saturday's Denver Food & Wine event, tasting eight cocktails. Really tasting eight cocktails, since these were complex concoctions (a DeKuyper product had to be part of the mix) that demanded my full attention. The ultimate victor: Ken Kody of Bacaro in Boulder, whose winning drink was named Amnesia, appropriately enough. Here's how to make it: In a mixer, blend 2 parts D

Nancy LevineI HEART Harvest week. If there's one week to go out to eat, it's this one. The harvest menus available at your local independent restaurants are exceptional -- and the cocktails are great, too. In fact, the cocktail in the above shot was so good that I actually forgot to take the photo until I'd already finished half of my drink. Made with Stranahan's Colorado Whiskey, carrot juice and ginger liqueur, it tastes a million times better than it sounds. But it's only availab

Nancy LevineKen Kodys after his victory at the Mix Master contest.Ken Kodys won the Mix Master competition, but he's also a champ behind the bar at Bacaro, 921 Pearl Street, where he's worked almost five years. Here's the second round of his Behind the Bar interview: How many times do you have to see someone to consider them a regular? I think there are three types of regulars: 1) the people I recognize, who probably come in about once a month; 2) the people whose names I know and have

  • Guess where I'm drinking?

Nancy Levine I went out last night to try the new fall cocktails at a place I love, but don't get to nearly as often as I'd like. After I'd tasted a number of delicious drinks (including a yummy red sangria with an orange twist, pictured above), the proprietor handed me a glass of red wine. It had an incredible, woody nose and was an amazing deal for the price point. That's when the proprietor told me it was a Colorado wine -- and I almost fell down. So where was I drinking?

Nancy Levine Although some people think that mint juleps should only be imbibed in the summer, I disagree. Wholeheartedly. So when I saw a mint julep on the menu at this establishment that's trying to make a name for itself with an impressive whiskey selection, despite the chilly weather outside, I ordered one immediately. The julep was served in a metal mug, and though it wasn't the customary pewter or silver, it certainly did the trick. I wish I knew what brand of bourbon the bartend

Nancy LevineCaleb Whitmore, behind the bar at Fogo de Chao Caleb Whitmore worked at the Fogo de Chao Churrascaria in Chicago, then moved to Denver this summer to open the Fogo here, bringing his caipirinha-making skills with him. And what's a caipirinha? "It's Brazil's most popular cocktail," explains Whitmore, "made from cachaca, sugar and fresh limes, shaken and served over ice." Now serving: Caleb Whitmore.

Nancy Levine This restaurant is the first place I take out-of-town guests who think Denver is fly-over culinary country. And while their shock over our incredibly good dinner was sweet, the bar's new selection of fall cocktails was perhaps too sweet. The one above was made with Leopold Bros. Cranberry Liquor and Apple Whiskey with a splash of soda; my favorite not-too-sweet-drink was made with Jim Beam, Domaine de Canton ginger liqueur and ginger beer. Guess where I'm drinking ... and,

Nancy LevineI only have a few rules for bartenders. The number one rule? When people come in the morning after Halloween for Sunday brunch, don't make them wait fifteen minutes while you set up the bar. Serve them their drinks immediately, and then get your station in order. So where was I desperately trying to get a little hair of the dog at 10 a.m. November 1?
