  • Q&A with Mike Watt

Mike Watt is most certainly a man whose thoughts cannot be expressed in a mere 500 or so words. Needless to say, this week's Rough Mixes entry only highlighted excerpts of our recent conversation with punk's elder statesman. While on tour supporting his newest punk rock opera "Hyphenated Man" and in advance of his upcoming show in Denver at the Larimer Lounge, Watt took some time between his soundcheck and his gig opening for Dinosaur Jr. at the Neighborhood Theatre in Charlotte, North Carolina,

  • Over the weekend: Wilco at Red Rocks

Wilco and Okkervil River Friday, July 3, 2008 Red Rocks Amphitheatre Better than: Wilco's show at the Pikes Peak Center last year. Just as Wilco took the stage, the theme from the Price is Right played and two people cloaked in a camel suit pranced across the stage. Sure, it might have been a bit silly, but so is having a camel on the cover of your album, which is the case on the band's latest recording, Wilco (the album). Whatever the case, the camel, the game show theme and the bouncy o

  • Nels Cline collaborates with the Bottesini Project

On Naima's Grass Pajamas, Paul Riola's Bottesini Project has assembled something of a dream lineup, including guitar legend Nels Cline of Wilco, bassist Keenan Wayne, CacheFlowe, Janet Feder and Glenn Taylor. The musicians recorded a day's worth of improvisations, then Riola and Colin Bricker spent many additional hours in the studio assembling the final product. "We collaged a lot of the sessions together, so we could form what we thought was a coherent narrative of the improvisations,"

Jon SolomonThe Bottesini Project Friday, October 16, 2009Notably Fine AudioBetter than: Any other local collective improvisation group.   One of the great things about Bottesini Project shows is the uniqueness of each performance. Since the shows are based completely based on collective improvisations, there's a freshness and vibrancy about the performances that's not found in rehashed jazz standards or playing tunes that have been completely mapped out. While the idea of free jazz might

  • The Bottesini Project sets up shop in Chicago

A while back, Paul Riola gave up his post as program director and treasurer at Creative Music Works to focus on making music with his Bottesini Project. With as passionate as Riola clearly was about the organization during his time there, the decision must've been made with much consideration. Before departing from CMW, the music he was creating with the Bottesini Project was well enough received, both locally and in places like San Francisco, where Riola and company played an impromptu set t
