  • Phish at Red Rocks sells out in minutes; fans call bullshit

It's not exactly a surprise that Phish's four-day stand at Red Rocks sold out in minutes, but there are elements of the whole thing that smell, well, Phish-y (sorry, I couldn't resist). At least one hard-core fan (the one I live with, to be specific) was online within seconds of the tickets going on sale, had several friends at different locations coordinating efforts to get tickets and ... still failed to get even a single seat. Yet somehow, minutes after the event sales opened, some guy had f

screen capture from StubHub.com (click to enlarge)So after last week's outrage over how the Phish shows at Red Rocks sold out seemingly instantaneously -- thanks, allegedly, to a gaggle of unscrupulous scalpers short-changing countless fans -- we thought we'd check back in to see how much tickets were going for now. Great googily-moogily, we about spit out our Tropicana this morning when we came across this listing on Stub Hub. Can't imagine anybody would actually fork over that much loot a

  • The details of Phish's Festival 8 revealed

Great news for those of you who missed out on getting tickets for Phish's upcoming four-night stand at Red Rocks next week. Ahem, actually, let us rephrase that -- this is great news for those with disposable income (yeah, we know, what is that, right?), vacation time and frequent flier miles to cash in: Phish has just announced Festival 8, a three-day extravaganza slated to take place at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California (yes, the exact same place as Coachella) during the weekend

  • Exchanging Phish stories before the big gigs this weekend

For fans of America's biggest cult band, the term "boys of summer" doesn't refer to guys who get paid millions to play baseball but rather four Vermont men in their forties who earn millions by playing goofy, unpredictable music while jumping on trampolines, having glowsticks thrown at and around them, and in the case of Phish drummer Jonathan Fishman, wearing a polka-dot muu-muu and playing a vacuum cleaner.

  • Last Night: Phish at Red Rocks

PhishThursday, July 30, 2009Red Rocks AmphitheatrePhish's first show in their return to Red Rock was, by all accounts, a success. The four-night run sold out instantaneously, and spare tickets were a rare site in the parking lot before the show. The few that were available were being sold for $300 to $400. Phish is a counter-culture phenomenon and since its return from exile in March, the act's shows have been snowballing into musical bliss. The outfit's fans travel from far and near to exper

  • Over the weekend: Phish at Red Rocks, 07/31/09

Aaron ThackerayPhish's second night in Morrison was a rain soaked affair that offered a stark contrast in music, from the leisurely and drab first set to the energized and voiciferus second set. Despite a strong start with crowd favorites like "Runaway Jim" and "Bathtub Gin," the dawdling feel to the set kept the mood rather subdued. One of the more sluggish moments came early on with the lengthy bathroom tune "TImeTurns Elastic." Even the raucous and set closing "Melt" was bland and lacked e

Aaron ThackerayPhish's return to the stage after five years on the lamb has the members reenergized, focused and, most importantly, sober. The effects of these changes have greatly enhanced the Phish experience. Phish 3.0 was on glorious display Saturday night at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. The quartet from Vermont used its momentum from Friday night's stellar second set to play one strong show. The setlist was full of surprises and many crowd favorites. It seems not only are the fans reaping the

  • Over the weekend: Phish at Red Rocks, 8/02/09

Aaron ThackerayPhish's last night at Red Rocks Amphitheatre was made complete with one very special guest, Bill Kruetzman. The former drummer of the Grateful Dead was not expected and to bring him out for six songs to close out the second set was quite a treat. In typical Phish fashion, the band employed a little trickery to keep everyone guessing. Instead of honoring Jerry Garcia on his birthday, Saturday August 1, they choose to bring Bill Kreutzman out on the day after his birthday, becaus

  • Advice for Phish phans in need of a buzz: Look for Colorado license plates

Believe it or not, drugs are fairly common at most concerts by Phish, whose phans have been known to follow them around the country, Grateful Dead-style. And according to police in Howard County, Maryland, a couple of Coloradans were doing their best to fill the phaithful's needs this past weekend -- at least until the boys in blue harshed their vibe. During Saturday's Phish concert at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, 31 people were busted on drug-sales charges, including Jeffr

  • Heavy Rotation, our top spins for the week of November 2, 2009

As music critics, the most common question we get asked (and ask each other, for that matter) is, "What are you listening to?" The pervasiveness of this query is precisely what inspired Heavy Rotation. For the benefit of those who happen to be curious, we've compiled a list of all the things we're listening to this week. Feel free to chime in with picks of your own after the jump.
