  • Denver bands announced for SXSW

While it's still a bit early, the official list of Denver acts invited to play SXSW seems pretty narrow. Given the extraordinary talent we have here, we're guessing that the number of artists who submitted this year is down and that this is really more of a reflection of the economy -- bands weighing the cost versus the benefits -- than on the worthiness of the music being made here. Not that the bands selected thus far (Slim Cessna's Auto Club, Wovenhand and Meese) don't merit inclusion or aren

  • Week in Review: 1/26/09 - 1/30/09

In terms of music news this was a slower week in the Mile High City. The biggest items were news of Overcasters being invited to perform at South By Southwest on the heels of a particularly harrowing trip to the East Coast a few weeks ago with the Fluid, followed closely by DJ Vajra's inclusion in a Serato Scratch ad in BPM Magazine. This week, the first review of the Fray's new record also came down from Rolling Stone, who panned it and tossed in a Coldplay comparison for good measure. Beyond

  • Enjoy 1,200 free songs, courtesy of SXSW

If you can't make it to Austin's fabled South by Southwest event this year (and who can? I can't even afford the gas it would take to drive there, much less the other expenses), here's something to ease the pain -- 1,267 songs from various SXSW artists, absolutely free of charge. That's enough music from the hippest, hottest bands on the planet to completely fill a smaller iPod, completely gratis. I'll give you a sec to pick your jaw off the floor.Okay, jaw back in place? Good. To ease the down

  • How to cope with SXSW withdrawal

All right, I'll admit it. I'm all kinds of bummed out. Not only am I feeling like two crates of ass specially flown in from Assville right now thanks to some stupid throat/sinus/ear infection, but I'm reeling from reading all the South By Southwest coverage from my colleagues (including a fairly middling review of the Wheel), reading about all of their exploits down in Austin and seeing all the pictures of all the cool bands they've seen. I'm think I'm just going through withdrawals or something

Saturday March 21 - Day 4: So here we are. Our last day in Austin. Going to try and take it easy today, seeing as how we have to drive to L.A. tonight, but I'm sure we'll still get into some trouble. We've got a show at 9 p.m. tonight at Maggie Mae's rooftop, and it's our official SXSW showcase showdown -- or atleast we've been calling it a showcase showdown (price is right, get it??). Anyway, really looking forward to this one. It's in a really cool venue, and there's a slew of other cool bands

The Epilogues gentlemen shot some video of the slackers (yes, slackers! dudes were supposed to keep a tour diary but ended up flaking and passing off the task to the Epilogues) in the Photo Atlas performing at SXSW. From the looks/sounds of it, the guys were in pretty decent form. Check out the video after the jump.

  • Over the Weekend: Why, ma'am, what a lovely paper dress

Our weekend started Thursday, with a bizarre made-from-paper fashion show, and continued through Saturday night with a not-at-all-bizarre parade of drunk people at the downtown Lodo's. In between we looked longingly at photos sent from our colleagues in Austin for South by Southwest. See pictures of it all at westword.com/slideshow, and read more from SXSW on the Backbeat blog.

  • Q&A with Nathan McGarvey

Black Mountain StudiosHearts of Palm started out in the winter of 2006 as a pop song writing collaboration between former Roper and Black Black Ocean guitarist Stephen Till and longtime friend Nathan McGarvey. Within the following year, the project expanded to eight plus members and the band's sound went from a spare and earnest beauty to an exuberant and impassioned exorcism of melancholy moods. During the course of the band's existence, it won accolades from critics and fans alike and relea
