  • The long silence of Matthew Murray's parents

Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see any comments from Ronald or Loretta Murray in the one-year anniversary stories about the church shootings in Arvada and Colorado Springs. But then, the Murrays haven't been eager to talk publicly about the multiple tragedies spawned by their deeply disturbed son Matthew, who killed four young people on December 9, 2007, before taking his own life. That's understandable. The Murrays were clearly blindsided by their son's shooting spree and were said to be "

  • Watch the KRDO report featuring Ted Haggard's latest accuser

Suddenly, Ted Haggard is everywhere again. Yesterday, the disgraced former pastor of Colorado Springs' New Life Church, who left that post following revelations of homosexual conduct unveiled by onetime male escort Mike Jones (who's made a new video lambasting the church), was named in headlines and featured on cable-news channels such as CNN after word leaked that another young man had come forward with an eyebrow-raising story. That tale debuted last night on KRDO-TV, Colorado Springs' ABC a

  • New Life Church shooting victim speaks out prior to Ted Haggard media tour

Amid all the revelations connected with Ted Haggard's attempted resurrection on HBO and Oprah, the accusations of payoffs involving yet another young man lusted after by the former pastor ("Watch the KRDO report featuring Ted Haggard's latest accuser"), and assorted other sordidness, a greater bit of deception and denial at New Life Church has been largely overooked -- the conflicting stories about killer Matthew Murray's 2007 attack on the church and its aftermath. So kudos to KHOW's Pete

  • Last Night: Joe Rogan at Comedy Works South

Near the end of his hour-long set at Comedy Works South last night, Joe Rogan's previously polished routine devolved into a call-and-response act, with audience members yelling out keywords off of which Rogan could riff. They yelled DPT, he did five minutes on Dipropyltryptamine, a gnarly psychedelic and dear friend of his. They shouted Fear Factor, he did three minutes on the life-sucking qualities of reality TV. They yelled Carlos Mencia, and there went Joe, on another rant about his joke-s

  • Wake-Up Call: The dudes of Haggard

"This is part of Ted's journey," Gayle Haggard told a reporter. "It's made him a better man. I see what has happened as a divine rescue." Of the Haggards' bank account, if nothing else. Three years ago Ted Haggard, then pastor of the New Life Church and head of the National Association of Evangelicals, had a weekly phone call with President George W. Bush. Now he's taking casting calls for reality shows -- specifically, Divorce Court. According to the Associated Press, Haggard and and his st

  • Wake-Up Call: Stand by your man -- even if he's Ted Haggard

Don't forget: Today, Ted Haggard and his wife, Gayle, appear on Divorce Court, to discuss how revelations of Haggard's extra-curricular (and intra-sex) activities affected the marriage. On the show, the disgraced former New Life pastor says he wanted his wife to divorce him, but she refused, even though he said he'd become "toxic." According to Haggard, his wife told him, "No way. I'm not going to do that." Not when going on Divorce Court is a much more civilized way to work things out.

  • Wake-Up Call: Paula Woodward makes some news

Paula Woodward's departure from Channel 9 is not good news -- except for loafing workers and, probably, Woodward herself. She deserves a break after 32 years at the station, 32 years that have seen some major changes in the television business. Woodward popped up in one of the first issues of Westword, in a story that long predates our online archives, when she went after an unethical apartment-rental company. And through the years, her name kept cropping up when one of her news investigation

  • Fast-track this: Five untapped Colorado energy sources

Thar she blows: The Penry-Huttner Geothermal Project. The Department of the Interior just designated six renewable energy projects, including a 400-megawatt solar tower, as "fast-track" developments deserving of the highest priority. All six of the projects happen to be in California. Hard to believe that Interior Secretary Ken Salazar would ignore all the potential energy sources in his home state. We've got tons of excess energy around here, begging to be harnessed for productive use.
