  • Mile High Makeout: Binge and purge

On the third day of an alcohol, caffeine, fat and sugar binge in the name of the winter solstice and some folks' savior, I'm feeling lethargic, unhealthy, dirty and startlingly unattractive. This is the stuff New Year's resolutions are made of. All I want to do is eat raw foods, spend four hours in the gym and try to save my internal organs from becoming completely enrobed in a protective layer of sweet, fatty tissue. In spite of all that, I'm going tonight. And you probably should too.

  • Mile High Makeout: Shadowy man on a shadowy planet

(photo: Jeff Klapperich)While I was out last weekend, an unassuming gentleman approached me and asked if I had room in my pocket for a CD. We'd met before, but I didn't remember that in the moment. I hate when I forget names and faces. Fortunately, Donny Rose was forgiving and gracious as he handed me a five-song EP by his band, My Shadow's Existence. I was wearing capacious jeans that night, and slipped the disc into my back pocket as I shook his hand.

  • Mile High Makeout: Coming home

Photo: Adam D'Antonio Jeremy D'Antonio left Colorado a while ago, taking his beautiful acoustic project, Tiny Television, with him. Since then, he has returned a few times for a show or two. On January 16th, however, D'Antonio and Tiny Television make a triumphant return, celebrating the release of a debut full-length album at the hi-dive. With Dan Craig, Britt Rodemich and Tim Pourbaix opening, the night promises to be a warm homecoming.

  • MP3 Freeloader: tonight, Tim Pourbaix CD release at Larimer Lounge

As you've undoubtedly gathered by now if you've read this week's items on Tim Pourbaix, in Rough Mixes and the extended companion piece on the blog, tonight will mark one of the singer-songwriter's last local performances as a resident of Denver. Pourbaix has made quite a mark on this town as an artist, and suffice it to say, we're sad to see him go. In honor of his CD release party tonight at the Larimer Lounge -- which will feature a solo performance from Pourbaix, as well as a set from Park P

  • Tim Pourbaix is Brooklyn bound

Ran into Tim Pourbaix very briefly last night. When we ducked out for a quick smoke in front of the Sputnik, he informed me that his new record is nearly finished as is the Park-Pourbaix project he's been working on with Ellison Park. No word on when the latter will be released, but the former, which Pourbaix promises features his best work to date, is slated to be issued in June at the Larimer Lounge. That's the good news. The bad news is that the former Killfix frontman will have to fly in for

  • Heavy Rotation, our top five spins for the week of May 11, 2009<

As music critics, the most common question we get asked (and ask each other, for that matter) is, "What are you listening to?" The pervasiveness of this query is precisely what inspired Heavy Rotation, our latest feature. For the benefit of those who happen to be curious, we've compiled a list of all the things we're listening to this week. Feel free to chime in with your own picks after the jump.

  • An extended conversation with Tim Pourbaix

In this week's issue, we're running a short profile on Tim Pourbaix in Rough Mixes, based on a lengthy interview Eryc Eyl conducted with Pourbaix. The singer-songwriter had much more to say than could fit into that smaller piece. Subsequently, we've opted to allow Pourbaix to tell his story -- which is extremely compelling -- here in his own words after the jump.

  • Mile Hi-Fidelity playlist - 07.22.09

Had an outstanding show last night. Whygee and Sunkenstate stopped by and discussed the new album, releasing it via Twitter -- a new and undeniably novel way of getting the word out -- the state of hip-hop in Denver and the obstacles local hip-hop artists face. We also premiered two songs from the new record, "In a Rut" and "Tears of the Son." And otherwise, despite the fact that the interview with Whygee and Sunkenstate was fairly lengthy, we managed to play eighteen other tracks. See the full
