Natalie Tysdal. As noted in a blog published earlier today, Martino TV, the pay-for-play show hosted by Tom Martino, debuted this morning on both Channel 31 and Channel 2 -- and another new program, Everyday, bows this afternoon at 4 p.m., with Natalie Tysdal and Fox 31 anchor Libby Weaver as co-hosts. Tysdal recently earned a Best of Denver award as the market's top female anchor, in part because the ratings produced by her excellent chemistry with Channel 2's Tom Green on that station's morni

  • Channel 2 general manager Dennis Leonard on layoffs, a prime-time shift and the concept behind "The Deuce"

Dennis Leonard, in a file photo from last October. Yesterday's blog "Channel 2 General Manager Dennis Leonard on rebranding his station The Deuce: 'It's the shit, dude!' " featured an excerpt from a conversation with the aforementioned Leonard, who also oversees Channel 31 as part of merger that took place last year. (Get the skinny in the October Message column "Channel 2 and 31 Mix It Up.") Now, to paraphrase Paul Harvey, here's the rest of the story -- or at least a bigger chunk. Like all l

  • Martino TV debut: A real sell job

Tom Martino. Today's debut of Martino TV, which airs at 9 a.m. on Channel 31 and again at 11 a.m. on Channel 2, sported its share of glitches -- but in comparison with the laughably catastrophic launch of the 7 p.m. Channel 2 news hour, known as News on the Deuce, it was a fairly smooth maiden voyage for a project sure to further fatten Martino's already bulging wallet. After all, the show is essentially an infomercial, during which the self-proclaimed Troubleshooter charges individuals and bus

  • Tom Martino's arrogance helps him win court case

Tom Martino. Last week, self-proclaimed "Troubleshooter" Tom Martino, a KHOW personality who's also part of Channel 31's staff, came out on top of a ruling by a San Francisco-based federal appeals court. In the decision, a three-judge panel declined to overrule a lower court's dismissal of a lawsuit filed by an Oregon couple, who claimed that they lost $600,000 worth of business after Martino labeled them liars on his program, which was nationally syndicated at the time. • Tom Martino to charge big bucks for his endorsement on Martino TV

Tom Martino. College-journalism professors teaching ethics could build entire classes around the career of Tom Martino. The co-owner of a rundown homeless hangout dubbed "Hotel Martino" in a recent Westword feature article, Martino acts as a de facto journalist on Channel 31, taking on sleazy businesses and scam artists under his "Troubleshooter" moniker. At the same time, he presents himself as a consumer champion on his KHOW radio show, exhibiting a fondness for "drama," "hyperbolic language

There could be some tension at the next Clear Channel Denver staff meeting. Dave Logan, longtime voice of the Broncos and co-host of the KOA afternoon-drive program The Ride Home (as well as a former high school athlete recently honored as being one of the fifty best ever by Parade magazine), is launching a new website called TeamDaveLogan.com, which will specialize in home-improvement referrals. The new enterprise is scheduled to launch on June 1 -- the very same day that fellow Clear Channel

  • Tom Martino attempts to ambush Westword writer in McDonald's parking lot!

Objects in mirror may be more Martino than they appear. At first I thought it was the Hamburglar in his new role as a Fox News correspondent. But, no, on closer inspection it was The Troubleshooter himself, Tom Martino, chasing after my car with a camera man in tow. Apparently, Martino has some concerns about an article I penned last month looking into connections between him and a multi-level marketing company he had promoted on Martino TV and his KHOW radio show. He has met with my edi

  • Wake-Up Call: The joys of journalism

I'm at Northwestern for a writing conference that the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies hosts at the Medill J-school, which is also home to the Academy for Alternative Journalism, a summer program for budding journalists that AAN sponsors. Jared Jacang Maher, a Westword staff writer, is a veteran of this program, and on Wednesday, as I was heading off to Chicago, we talked about how the Academy had really given the new University of Colorado grad the impetus to go into journalism.

  • Tom Martino misidentifies writer in Westword "exposé"

Tom Martino: He's always good for a laugh. Apparently concerned about a recent Jared Jacang Maher article about connections between him and a multi-level marketing company he'd promoted on Martino TV and his KHOW radio show, the self-proclaimed Troubleshooter had an associate call in a phony tip in order to lure Maher to a meeting last week at an area McDonald's. There, Martino and a cameraman attempted to ambush Maher, who simply drove away from the madness. Foiled in this effort to put Maher

  • Is Tom Martino afraid of Adam Cayton-Holland?

KHOW and Channel 31 personality Tom Martino's botched ambush of Westword staffer Jared Jacang Maher in the wake of a feature article detailing the Troubleshooter's connections to a multi-level marketing company is the gift that keeps on giving. Martino posted footage of his shenanigans in which he repeatedly used a photo that he thought featured Maher -- but the image actually starred former Westword staffer Adam Cayton-Holland. (See Martino's video after the jump.) Now, Cayton-Holland, curren

John Hickenlooper and Bill Ritter let their hair down (click to enlarge). In today's Denver Post, media writer Joanne Ostrow takes on the September cover of Denver Magazine, in which Channel 31 stars Libby Weaver and Natalie Tysdal are transformed from anchors to shank-ers. After spotlighting quotes from Weaver and station exec Carolyn Kane shrugging off any scent of controversy over the couples' quasi-salacious pose, Ostrow essentially suggests that, given the difficulties the TV industry
