  • CityGrille gets a crash course

Those "Best Burger" banners over CityGrille, at 321 East Colfax Avenue, got plenty of play last week when TV newscasts reported on a Colfax car accident November 24 that sent a car careening into the doorway. The bar/burger joint had to close for the night to assess the damage, but it reopened the next day little worse for wear -- except for some telltale cracks in the stucco to the left of the door. The damage was nowhere near as drastic as what happened when a car crashed

Eighty Latinos died in traffic accidents in Colorado in 2008, or roughly one quarter of the total number of people who were killed in car crashes. Of the eighty, 59 were unbuckled. So it made sense for the Colorado Department of Transportation to -- for the first time ever -- run a TV advertisement in Spanish warning people that they should buckle up. After all, the commercial only cost $15,000 to produce -- less than the cost of a new car. It was paid for out of $5.3 million in federal tra

  • Titans' LenDale White avoids charges after hometown altercation

There are plenty of things you might expect Denver native and Tennessee Titans running back LenDale White to do after a traffic accident. If you're nice, he might offer to sign the hood of your car. If you're confrontational, he may rush at you nine times for -5 yards and three touchdowns. If you're delicious looking, he may pour some ranch dressing on you and eat you. Or if you happen to be holding a terrible towel... well, the video above reminds us about how he'd handle that. But accordin

  • Your St. Patrick's Day mission: Get as drunk as this guy...

Here's a look at an excellent, and exceedingly timely, moment in local TV history: Channel 31's coverage of this year's St. Patrick's Day parade. What's so great about it? The report is largely narrated by Adam, a boisterous reveler who spends the better part of two minutes whooping with delight, commenting on traffic accidents and saluting St. Bernards, because any dog that carries whiskey is all right by him. Click above for more St. Patty's inspiration than the average liver can stand. And

  • Speed kills in off-highway crash

Seat belts are important: Every car passenger should wear them. But they're not a panacea -- particularly when a vehicle traveling more than 100 MPH loses control. That's what happened yesterday afternoon at 56th Avenue east of E-470. The driver died as a result of the crash in the fifth fatal accident investigated by the Aurora Police Traffic Section this year, while the as-yet-unidentified passenger has been hospitalized. Read the Aurora PD release after the jump.

  • Victim identified in off-highway crash; illegal immigrant may have caused another fatal accident

The driver and passenger involved in a crash at 56th Avenue and E-470 noted in the Wednesday blog "Speed Kills in Off-Highway Crash" have been identified as Nelson Starks, 49, of Denver (who died as a result of the accident), and Frankie Biggs, 25, Starks' stepson, who was hospitalized. Then, last night, a motorcyclist died in a crash involving a car -- and police have reason to suspect that the driver of the car was in this country illegally. Alert Peter Boyles. • Drive safely this weekend -- or else an army of cops will bust your ass

This weekend, law enforcement agencies across the state will be out in force to make sure you don't do anything stupid behind the wheel over the Memorial Day weekend. This link on the Colorado Department of Transportation website details the specific plans of 85 separate organizations. For instance, the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office "will have three overtime Patrol Deputies work DUI/Saturation patrols on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday nights. They will concentrate on Hot Spots in the U

  • Mile High Murder, No. 24: Bill Strother identified as dead man in 14954 East Elk Place homicide

View Larger Map Late on July 4, Denver Police officers responded to a call at 14954 East Elk Place in Montbello, an area captured in the graphic above (if you have problems seeing the image, click "View Larger Map"). There, they found two men suffering from gunshot wounds: one dead, one alive. Now, the Denver Coroner's Office has identified the decedent as Bill Strother, who perished as the result of a "perforating gunshot wound of the chest." Below, find the DCO release, which also identifies

  • Wake-Up Call: State of the union

At the entrance to my local Safeway, just off Federal at 26th Avenue, a small plaque in the ground commemorates two grocery-store workers who were killed when a car crashed into the store's parking lot back in 1996. On a door to the store are fliers advertising job opportunities at Safeway -- evidence of the state of the union today. Safeway's contract with the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7 was scheduled to expire on Saturday; now Safeway, King Soopers and Local 7 have agreed to

  • Mile High Murder, No. 34: Dominick Wilmer charged with vehicular homicide in deaths of Jonathan Richardson and Grace Cruthers

View Larger Map The crash that took place during the wee hours of August 15 on Titan Road near Rampart Range Road, an area captured in the graphic above (if you have problems seeing the image, click "View Larger Map"), certainly qualifies as a tragic accident. But according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, it was also a crime. Dominick Wilmer, 26, has been charged with two counts of vehicular homicide in the incident, which took the lives of Jonathan Richardson, 26, and Grace Cruthers, 29

  • Mile High Murder, No. 53: Thomas William Boyle booked on vehicular homicide for Harlan Street hit and run that killed Raymond Rivera

Thomas William Boyle should have taken a cab.Late Monday evening, Raymond Rivera, 48, tried to cross Harlan Street at Alameda Avenue. Unfortunately, he didn't make it -- and the vehicle that struck him didn't stop. According to the Lakewood Police Department, Rivera was struck by a van driven by 48-year-old Thomas William Boyle, who was later booked for felony hit and run, driving under the influence, careless driving and vehicular homicide. A bad drive for all concerned. Check out more
