  • The end of the line for AWOL Marine Lance Hering

Two looks at Lance Hering. The strange story of Marine Lance Corporal Lance Hering -- whose story was chronicled in the April 2007 feature article "An Uphill Battle" -- just got a little stranger. Hering first came to the public's attention when his best friend, Steve Powers, emerged from Eldorado Canyon in August 2006 and informed authorities that Hering, a Marine on leave from Camp Pendleton in California, had fallen while rock-climbing and hit his head. • The Lance Hering story continues

Lance Hering, the marine who faked his own death in Eldorado Canyon and disappeared nearly two years ago, days before he was to report back to active duty, will face a summary court-martial Friday at Camp Pendleton, where he is currently being held. Hering will be charged with one count of Article 85 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. If he's convicted, he could face up to a year in military prison and a discharge for bad conduct. • After being cleared of wrongdoing, Mike Coffman fires back at Colorado Ethics Watch

Mike Coffman's not happy with Colorado Ethics Watch. After the Independent Ethics Commission failed to censure 6th District Congressman Mike Coffman, Colorado Ethics Watch director Chantall Taylor issued a statement expressing disappointment that the IEC had let Coffman off the hook so easily. Not surprisingly, Coffman's own response to the ruling is considerably different. Instead of taking satisfaction in his victory, he focuses on excoriating CEW, which he accuses of waging a "two-year frivo

  • Air Force Academy doc's study: A lot of what we think we know about swine flu may be wrong

A Flickr photoThe Air Force Academy has punched swine flu in the snout. We've all been told that the H1N1 virus, aka swine flu, is no longer contagious 24 hours after a person's fever has broken. But hold up a minute. A new study overseen by Air Force Academy doctor Catherine Witkop and published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine focuses on a large group of cadets who contracted the virus over the summer -- and 29 percent of those with a fever under 100 after a full day, and
