  • More than 100 University of Denver staffers apply for voluntary severance

Like Denver Boone, the longtime University of Denver mascot seen here, who was deep-sixed a few years back in part because he was deemed insufficiently manly and sophisticated, plenty of DU employees will soon be leaving the school. According to "Staff Leave Under Voluntary Severance Plan," a story in today's edition of the DU Clarion, an online student newspaper, "At least 111 staff members have applied for voluntary severance from DU as a result of the financial crisis affecting the universi

  • Today's Night & Day featured event: The Goldberger Week of Jewish Culture brings it all together at CU-Boulder

David Shneer is a one-man dynamo when it's come to bringing into focus the divergent cultural wings of the Jewish diaspora locally, in the past as a professor and director of the Center for Judaic Studies at the University of Denver and currently in a similar role at CU-Boulder. And he's starting off his new gig in Boulder with bang, with the Goldberger Week of Jewish Culture. The series kicks off tonight with "1000 Years of Yiddish Performance: An Evening of Yiddish Culture" with Berliner

Just received word that psych-pop magicians Widowers are making an appearance on KVDU, the University of Denver's college radio station (wait, DU has a college radio station? Who knew?). Tune in to your Internet -- it appears that KVDU is an Internet-only radio station (sorry commuters!) from 4 to 6 p.m. today to catch a live acoustic set in the studio from frontman Mike Marchant and a few of his cohorts. Click here to find info about KDVU and tune in to the show.

  • Al Hood releases new CD, stakes claim as Denver's busiest jazz musician

Al Hood has a very crowded agenda. The trumpeter teaches fulltime at the University of Denver's Lamont School of Music in addition to contributing to a slew of ensembles, including the Denver Brass and the Ken Walker Jazz Sextet. Somehow, though, he also found time to record a new CD entitled Just a Little Taste: Al Hood Plays the Writing of Dave Hanson. It's a creamy, elegant collection featuring tunes by jazz talents like Benny Golson ("I Remember Clifford") and Lee Morgan ("Ceora"), as well

Photo courtesy the University of DenverMichelle Kwan collects another trophy -- of sorts. Star figure skater Michelle Kwan wanted to be seen as just another University of Denver student during her stint at her school. But, of course, just another University of Denver student wouldn't have been featured in her own DU press release at sheepskin-collection time. Following her graduation this weekend, DU posted a piece headlined, "Figure skater Michelle Kwan Adds DU Diploma to List of Accomplishmen

  • Wake-Up Call: Read all about it

It's been a bad year for newspapers, with cities acorss the country losing important institutions like the Rocky Mountain News. But it's been a very good year for homeless newspapers, judging from the entries in the first annual North American Street Newspaper Association Newspaper Awards. I was lucky enough to be one of the judges of that contest, which included work from twenty street newspapers across North America. Staffers from those papers are in Denver right now for an annual conf

Lori Midson Illegal Pete's, home of the fat fish burrito, has just opened its sixth location at 1744 East Evans Avenue, a textbook's toss from the University of Denver campus. Like its other outposts, the fast-casual coastal Mexican, whose beer-battered fish filets (and counter staff that mixes up your burrito ingredients) have made the joint somewhat of a local phenom, is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday until 2:30 a.m. Best thing about the join
