  • Wake-Up Call: Looking for work is hard work

Today is officially Keep Colorado Working day – but where, exactly, are people supposed to be working? Yesterday, Intrawest Corporation– which runs Winter Park and owns Steamboat and Copper Mountain – announced companywide cuts. (Happy opening day, Winter Park!) And here in town, longtime businesses are looking at layoffs – and worse – as holiday sales fail to materialize. Colorado leaders know that the immediate outlook is grim, which is why Governor Bill Ritter last week announ

  • But wait! There are restaurants in actual ski lodges in Colorado!

Echo Mountain, the ski area closest to Denver, just kicked off its third full season of operation on Friday, and while the mountain is relatively no-frills, it does have a restaurant: the Echo Cafe, located in Echo's Garage. Fresh soups, sandwiches and pizzas have been added to the menu at this indoor/outdoor dining space -- and all meals come complete with a spectacular view of the Continental Divide. For a more upscale dining experience, there's The Lodge at Sunspot, the Winter

  • Mother Nature screws urban snowboarders at Denver's Ruby Hill Park

In yet another example of why global warming sucks, Denver Parks and Recreation announced yesterday that they are once again postponing the January 24 opening of the Ruby Hill Rail Yard, the nation's only urban snowboard park, "until further notice." The culprit? Unseasonably warm weather. Obviously, the photo above is from last year, since we figured an image of a bunch of grass and inert snow blowers would just be depressing to the hundreds of kids who have flocked to the West Denver spot

  • Lime, Cheeky Monk head for the hills

The Winter Park ski area is actually owned by the city of Denver -- and now two familiar Denver eateries have joined the new Village project at the base of the ski hill.Lime finally opened a fourth outpost in Winter Park -- and its margaritas seem particularly potent at 9,000 feet. Otherwise, the menu looks very close to the menus available at the original restaurant/club in Larimer Square, at Lime XS on Sixth Avenue, and in the Lime that opened late last year in the Landmark project in Greenwoo

Colorado's SolVista Bike Park at Granby Ranch got the best endorsement imaginable when it was chosen to host this summer's USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Championships, featuring both the elite of international mountain biking, hundreds of them, and an equally rampant onslaught of amateurs in cross country, downhill, single speed, super-d, 4X and short track races. Holy gear shift, Batman: That's a lot of bikers. They'll be roaring through the park, located off Highway 40, fifteen miles no
