  • Obama and Leeeeeeeeroy Jenkins: Change we can believe in

Just when the world seems in capable hands with the election of Barack Obama, some disquieting news comes out: The president-elect has hired a disciple of Leeroy Jenkins, the wacko who gained global fame by running beserk in the online game World of Warcraft. (To learn about the mild-mannered local behind this viral-video worldwide phenomenon, check out our story "The Legend of Leeroy Jenkins.") Here's the skivvy. Last week, Obama hired Kevin Werbach and Susan Crawford, net n

  • Don't hate the playa: Thoughts on writing in the Digg era

The nature of print media is strange these days. Pages shrivel and shrink, then disappear altogether, while paid positions dry up like teens on Proactiv, resulting in a frenzied scramble toward writers and editors doing more with less, pissed off at their frozen salaries yet unable to bitch about it for fear of further noose-tightening. And always, always the mad dash to the web. Because if it's the web that's killing the paper, why not keep the enemy closer? It was a wise man indeed who told

  • The Westword Meth Project: Vote for your favorite fake anti-meth slogan

From ColoradoMethProject.org Tweet a request for fake anti-meth slogans and ye shall receive. Earlier today, we posted a blog offering alternative slogans for the fledgling Colorado Meth Project's new ad campaign. The ads are aimed at teenagers and feature gritty images aside such slogans as, "No one thinks they'll try to tear off their own skin. Meth will change that." Among our suggestions: No one thinks the square root of 36 is 5. Meth will change that. We Tweeted a link to the blog and --

  • Will Leeroy Jenkins make the new World of Warcraft movie?

A pair of Hollywood studios said this week that Sam Raimi (of Spider-Man fame) will direct a live-action movie based on the online video game, World of Warcraft, and we can only hope there will be part, even a small one, for our old friend, Leeroy Jenkins. Jenkins, of course, is the character created by local gamer Ben Schulz -- a character who became famous after Schulz and his friends created an inane Warcraft video called "A Rough Go," as described in the Westword story, "The Legend of Leero

  • What the crappy treats you give out on Halloween say about you

At first, handing out lame treats on Halloween seems like a victimless crime. Kids are already getting bags of candy as it is, so what's the harm with one fewer awesome treat. Part of the harm is that they're not the victim, really--you are. You, your house, your cars, your trees, your pets. But mostly, your reputation. What you dole out speaks for you, for better or worse, so here's what some legendarily crappy Halloween treats are screaming for you, at the top of their lame-ass lung

  • Five reasons to believe the future has arrived

Still no flying car, but I've got something betterAll too often, people get so hung up on the fantastic future we didn't get that they can't focus on the even-crazier one we did. You know the complaints: "Where's my flying car? Why can't I live forever? When do I get to visit the moon?" But flying cars are the worst idea ever (most people can't drive a car in two dimensions, you want to add a third?), immortality means you'd be stuck with the same people you already hate for eternity and
