100 Favorite Dishes: Aguas Frescas from El Taco Veloz

Number 18: Aguas Frescas from El Taco Veloz

The only thing better than an al pastor taco from El Taco Veloz, 5145 Federal Boulevard, is a ten-pack of al pastor tacos, which -- major bummer -- they don't actually offer. I'm obsessed with them. That obsession stretches to the enormous salsa bar and to the saucer-size crunchy gorditas, griddled and stuffed with molten queso, caramelized shards of pork and cables of stewed, spicy green chiles, the combination of which may very well elevate it to the best gordita in the universe. But while everything at this raucous taqueria, scented with the unmistakable char of chiles, is mindbogglingly delicious, it's the fresh-made aguas frescas that really set it apart from the convoy of taco huts that line Federal. Made with mashed fruit, ice, a little sugar and water, the juices are ladled from wide-mouthed glass barrel jars into huge Styrofoam cups. The flavors, of which there are always four, change frequently, but if they're pouring strawberry, that's what you're drinking.
