100 Favorite Dishes: Chili gobi from Jai Ho

No. 61: Chili gobi from Jai Ho

There are a million dishes on the behemoth menu at Jai Ho, and some of them are very, very good, but the esoteric Indian restaurant in Aurora, with its unapologetically relaxed service and springy booths that bounce with every butt move, could serve just one dish -- and one dish only -- and we'd be the first in line to wrap our jaws around it. And that's the chili gobi, an Indo-Chinese plate tumbling with florets of cauliflower smeared with spices, perfumed with garlic and ginger, tossed with long-cooked onions and barbarically, vigorously laced with the intense thrust of chilies. It's an exhilarating adrenaline rush that extends far beyond a wallop, and you'll need to pump a tankful of beer down your gullet to extinguish the burning flames. Thankfully, the bar is well-stocked.

In late 2009, we embarked on a culinary journey that took us through our favorite dishes in the Mile High City -- one hundred, to be exact. Now we're back with round two, counting down (in no particular order) a hundred more of our favorite Denver dishes in a list that, by our imperfect calculations, should be wrapped up...sometime this year. If there's a dish you think we need to try, tell us about it in the comments section below, or shoot us an e-mail at lori.midson@westword.com.
