Best of Denver 2010 was released April 1, but Cafe Society continued to count down, in no particular order, our 100 favorite dishes, a project that ends today with our final dish, the feijoada from Emporio do Brasil.

Number 1: Feijoada from Emporio do Brasil

Emporio do Brasil, a tiny Brazilian grocer and restaurant shoehorned into a tight corner of a Federal Boulevard small mall, serves the city's best feijoada, the undisputed national dish of Brazil, one day a week, on Saturday, and only on Saturday. You can balk at the inconvenience of it all (you wouldn't be the first), or you can embrace it as a Saturday ritual (many people do) that entails ordering at the counter, along with everyone else, while inhaling the scent of animal parts wafting from the tiny kitchen. Stalk a table, sit down and and once it arrives, behold the crock full of garlic, smoky sausage coins, bits of bacon, pork loin and dried beef submerged in an inky stew of black beans. It's served, as is customary, with wedges of orange, streamers of collard greens, a heap of white rice and a mound of farofa, toasted manioc flour that has the texture of grit, which somehow, inexplicably, improves whatever it touches. If you want to douse your feijoada with fire, the tables are graced with bottled hot sauces, one of which is a chile-infused vinegar that you'll want to pocket.
