100 Favorite Dishes: Fried tacos from Mexico City Lounge

Number 2: Fried tacos from Mexico City Lounge

One taco from Mexico City Lounge is never enough, which explains why the family-owned, decades-old joint serves them in orders of three, or four. The shells, deep-fried, crisp, glistening with hot oil and surfaced on the inside with melted cheese, are filled with ribbons of lettuce, half moons of avocado, tomatoes and chicken, beef or steak, the last of which is our favorite. They're crunchy and chewy, greasy and diabolically caloric, and when you streak them with the spicy housemade red salsa, squeezed from one of the dozen bottles littering the tables, they're absolutely amazing.
