No. 36: Pop-tarts from Devil's Food Bakery and Cookery

I sinned. Not once, but twice. And the fiendish pop-tarts at Devil's Food Bakery and Cookery are entirely to blame. I stopped in a few days ago to grab an iced tea, but there, in the glass case of sweets and scones, were a tray of pop-tarts -- gorgeous, shimmery pop-tarts that resembled nothing like the horrid ones you find in a box. I asked for two: a blueberry and a raspberry, promising myself that I'd eat one and give the second to my son. He's still waiting. Boxed pop-tarts, despite their inexplicable popularity, are just gross, but these? I've never had anything like them. Lightly iced, lavishly sprinkled, hued in pastels and beautiful to behold, the dough, buttery and soft, flaky and warm, embraces housemade fruit fillings that pop with sweet freshness. Farewell to cupcakes and pie: Pop-tarts should be the next big thing to sweep the dessert world.

In late 2009, we embarked on a culinary journey that took us through our favorite dishes in the Mile High City -- one hundred, to be exact. Now we're back with round two, counting down (in no particular order) a hundred more of our favorite Denver dishes in a list that, by our imperfect calculations, should be wrapped up...before Best of Denver® 2012. If there's a dish you think we need to try, tell us about it in the comments section below, or shoot us an e-mail at lori.midson@westword.com.
