Golden Plate II (no relation to the Golden Plate Chinese restaurant that once graced East Hampden Avenue) occupies a nearly invisible space in a nondescript strip mall that had, up until January, also featured the hair-metal bar Eck's Saloon as its main draw. The little Chinese restaurant has survived in the spot for more than twenty years, serving mostly American-Chinese dishes for lunch, dinner and takeout to residents of the subdivisions in the surrounding area. But a couple of unique dishes still hide among the Kung Pao, mooshu and General Tso's; specifically a delightful appetizer featuring flaky rounds of pastry that the menu calls sesame pockets, served with either pork or chicken hash.

Known as shaobing in China, from the outside these sesame pockets resemble miniature pita bread coated in sesame seeds. But the resemblance ends there; Golden Plate's shaobing are moist and layered on the inside like a slightly doughy version of a croissant, while the exterior is crisp and nutty.

Peel apart the interior layers to form a pouch and spoon in the mixture of fine-ground pork, minced vegetable and herbs. The hash — we recommend pork over chicken — is mild and tender, with bright notes from scallions and a lightly porky flavor. Touched with a drop or two of soy sauce (or some chile oil from the kitchen), the flavors come alive, but the real joy of this dish is the simple, rustic appeal of the pockets themselves. They're quaint, tiny and addictive, so an order (which comes with six half-moon pockets) makes for a light appetizer for two; if you're party is bigger than that, you'll want to order multiple plates.

This is Chinese street food in a suburban strip-mall setting. and even if the rest of Golden Plate's menu tilts toward warm and filling versus exciting and new, the sesame pockets are worth the expedition.
