Number 52: Spinach pinwheels from Virgilio's Pizzeria
Back in the early days of Virgilio's Pizzeria, the spinach pinwheels flew out the door faster than owner Virgilio Urbano's temper. Urbano, an East Coaster, has since mellowed, but his spinach pinwheels, marvels of gold-bottomed coils of dough glistening with olive oil and swelled with garlic, creamy ricotta, verdant spinach leaves and mozzarella, are still as coveted as the crown jewels. The spinach pinwheels are always on the menu, but occasionally Urbano piggybacks those pinwheels with sheets of prosciutto, which he'll run as a special. He doesn't roll them out very often, but if you happen to be there on a day when he does, consider yourself one of the luckiest people on the planet.
