When 300 Suns Brewing opens in Longmont this Saturday, it will become the first new brewery to open in town since Oskar Blues -- now Colorado's second largest beer maker -- moved there from Lyons in 2009 and only the fourth brewery overall.
So, there's a little bit of pressure -- but mostly, there's anticipation, says Dan Ditslear, who owns 300 Suns with his wife, Jean, Mark Lusher and Candace Newcomb.
"We've gotten really great support from all the local breweries," he says, adding that he's purchased some small items from Left Hand and gotten advice from the Pumphouse. "I don't see us as being competition. I think we are all trying to make Longmont a better craft beer community, and I think we will fill a niche in that is missing."
The brewery is named for Colorado's famed (if not entirely correct) reputation for having 300 sunny days per year. But it was some of the worst cloudy ones last fall that put a few twists into the process of opening for 300 Suns.
Although the brewery itself was spared any damage from the devastating floods that hit Boulder County in September 2013 -- "the water came within four inches of our front door," Ditslear says -- the city's infrastructure was overwhelmed by flood-related issues.
Now that the sun is out again, though, Ditslear and company are looking forward to serving the beers they've been working on, including a red, a brown, a pale ale, a stout, and a SMaSH beer (which uses a single kind of malt and a single kind of hops). The SMaSH beer, in particular, is something the brewery plans to play with in the future.
The 3,000-square-foot brewery includes a 1,250-square-foot tasting room and a brewhouse with a seven-barrel system. There is a 650-square-foot outdoor deck. All together, the brewery can hold about 160 people inside and out.
