Beer calendar for the week ahead: The Copper Kettle opens and the Wynkoop medicates

American Craft Beer Week starts in a little less than three weeks, but the nine (yes, nine!) breweries in Fort Collins have already banded together to brew a collaboration beer that celebrates the seven days that Congress dedicated to the quaffing of craft brew.
C.B. & Potts, Coopersmith's, Crooked Stave, Equinox, Fort Collins Brewery, Funkwerks, New Belgium, Odell Brewing and Pateros Creek worked together on recipes that will be brewed simultaneously on Friday at two different locations. The beer will be poured at each brewery during American Craft Beer Week, which takes place May 16-22.

Wednesday, April 20
UPDATE: This event has been rescheduled due to weather and will now take place on May 5.Vine Street Pub celebrates its third birthday today at 4:20 p.m. with its Smoking Hot Anniversary Party. The place will toast the day with a new beer called Chupacabra, an imperial Mexican lager brewed with agave nectar. In addition, there will be guest beers from Great Divide, grilled burgers, pulled pork sandwiches, brats and garden burgers, and music from the By All Means Band. Proceeds benefit Judi's House, a nonprofit providing support for children and families who have lost loved ones.
Wynkoop Brewing will get into the swing of 4/20 by tapping Meta-Cool Maltuwanna (say that fast, medical marijuana fans), an 8 percent ABV hoppy amber ale made with hemp seed. "It's got a big, dank, sticky aroma that when you smell it, you might have the feeling you're walking by your local dispensary," says Wynkoop spokesman Marty Jones. The beer will also be on tap at some of the Wynkoop's other establishments later in the week, where Jones says it will pair well with Fritos and bean dip. "It's going to be a great hit."
Friday, April 22
Brand-new beer maker, Copper Kettle Brewing, 1338 South Valentia Street, Unit 100 (between Denver and Aurora), will open its doors to the public today at 3 p.m. and celebrate all weekend long with its lineup of beers, including Copper Mezzina Pale Ale, Bavarian Hells Helles, Summer Ale, *Dusseldorf Altbier, Mexican Chocolate Stout and Roggenbier Rye. Owners Jeremy Gobien and Kristen Kozik believe they are filling a geographical hole for Denver-area breweries. Copper Kettle seats 52, but since it doesn't serve food, there will be food trucks on hand: Chicago Louie on Friday and Basic Kneads Pizza on Saturday. Copper Kettle will be open at noon on Saturday and Sunday.
Yes, Ale House at Amato's, 2501 16th Street, has been open for a for a few weeks, but the new LoHi beer palace will celebrate its grand opening today from 2 to 4 p.m. with a beer tasting featuring brews from Breckenridge (which owns the Ale House), Wynkoop and Great Divide. Staff from the three breweries will pair the beers with cheeses.
Saturday, April 23
Strange Brewing, 1330 Zuni Street, will celebrate one year's worth of beer-making today at 4 p.m. by tapping 151, a Belgian Trippel that owners Tim Meyers and John Fletcher whipped up on April 23, 2010. The date is significant because it was exactly one year after the two former Rocky Mountain News employees were laid off by the Denver Newspaper Agency. Coincidentally, April 23, 2009, would have also been the 150th Anniversary of the Rocky Mountain News -- which shut down in February of that year. The name 151 comes from that anniversary.
Tuesday, April 26
Cheeky Monk waited for all the craziness over Pliny the Younger to die down last month and will tap its own five-gallon keg of the much-loved Russian River cult beer at 7 p.m. today. Tickets go on sale at 6:30 and are $10 for a ten-ounce pour.
Boulder's Upslope Brewing is scheduled to reopen its tap room after a three-month hiatus for a major expansion. If all goes according to plan, there will be a larger bar, a new stage and twice as much room. If the date changes, we'll update this post.
City, O' City will tap a firkin of the Wynkoop Brewing Company's vanilla-oaked ESB tonight at 7 p.m.
