Drink of the Week

I scream, you scream. Gelato and alcohol are two of my top-five foods, so I was thrilled when Gelazzi, a bar and gelato shop, opened in Larimer Square last November. The bright space, filled with modern Italian decor in vibrant colors, is delightful -- almost as delightful as the Gelazzi itself. This trademarked treat combines gelato and your choice of alcohol into a delicious adult beverage, served either as a martini with a scoop, or shaken. We're not talking about some mid-level chain's frozen milkshake with a little Kahlúa thrown in here; we're talking about a real cocktail. The White Russian ($6.95), made with Absolut vodka, Kahlúa and double-milk gelato, may resemble a high-quality milkshake -- but one with a lethal kick. The Luna Blu ("blue moon," for those of you who don't parlez Italian), a combination of lime gelato, Beefeater gin and Marie Brizard Parfait Amour (a sweet, violet liqueur made from and tasting of Spanish oranges, violets and vanilla from Madagascar), is the most floral gin martini you'll ever experience. My favorite Gelazzi, though, is the Greyhound ($6.95), made with Absolut Vodka and pink-grapefruit gelato; it tastes like sunshine in a glass. All drinks are $1 off during happy hour, which runs from 4 to 6 p.m. But any time of the day or evening, this is a place where both kids and adults can be in high spirits.
