Fractured Prune Doughnuts Set to Break Into the Denver Market

Doughnuts have become a big business in Denver since Dunkin' Donuts made a comeback in Colorado and Voodoo Doughnut opened its first non-Oregon store on East Colfax last year. Now a new national player in the fried-dough game is coming to Denver -- and it may just have the worst name of any eatery around. Fractured Prune Doughnuts, a chain out of Ocean City, Maryland, will open its first Denver shop on South Colorado Boulevard in late January or early February, according to a Fractured Prune spokesperson. The company has a story to go with that name, though, and a unique way of serving doughnuts.

According to company lore, Fractured Prune got its name from local Maryland legend Prunella Shriek, who was known as Fractured Prunella because of the frequent injuries she received playing sports against men well into her seventies. The first Fractured Prune opened in 1976, but the company was recently purchased by Dan Brinton, who is taking the name nationwide, with over twenty current locations and plans to franchise up to fifty more across the country.

The company sets itself apart from the competition by offering made-to-order doughnuts with a choice of more than fifteen glazes and fifteen toppings (numbers vary with weekly specials); for a set price you can get one of each, or you can pick from a list of pre-made topping combos.

So while the company may love the color purple, you won't find any actual prunes in or on your doughnuts. And despite the bandaged F in the logo, stopping in for a doughnut shouldn't cost you an arm and a leg.
