Q: Where do three restaurateurs who all work at the hip Lola and share a birthday go to celebrate?
"It was awesome," reported one of the birthday boys yesterday, when I stopped in for brunch at Lola -- the readers' choice for Best Brunch, and our pick for Best Mostly Mexican Brunch. For their joint March 22 birthday, they left the happening Highland restaurant in favor of dinner at the venerable (and cheesy) White Fence Farm, complete with petting zoo and gift shop. But then there's the Farm's most important asset, a fried chicken dinner served family-style for $13.75 and, he reported, "it's great fried chicken."
And Lola knows about its chicken: The brunch menu is slated to change next week, and included on the new entree list is Chicken & Waffle, with "chorizo gravy, blue corn waffle, guajillo chili-cherry syrup." Sounds like it could give the Corner Office a run for next year's Best Chicken and Waffles.
Also coming up on the new menu: BLT Benedict, chilaquiles (with asparagus green chili), butterbean refritos and a pulled pork belly sandwich -- but the chicken-fried pork is gone, giving everyone's arteries a break.
