The wave of new restaurant openings has definitely subsided since the frenetic pace set last fall and winter. Still, March had its share of big-name openings as well as a couple of surprises. The Baron family (founders of the Udi's brand) shuttered Sylvi's Kitchen in the Lowenstein complex at the end of 2014 and repurposed the wood-burning oven for Detroit-style pizzas at the Good Son, which opened this month. And at the very end of March, Asian cuisine wunderkind Lon Symensma opened his pan-Asian noodle house, Cho77, on South Broadway with a virtual atlas of Southeast Asia for a menu. Tocabe: An American Indian Eatery quietly launched its second location, this one serving Indian fry bread to the cubicle set in Greenwood Village. And Nocturne brought jazz back to Five Points at a modern dinner club catering to a hip young audience who knows the neighborhood better as RiNo. Also in Five Points proper, Randall Borne's Cajun and Creole eatery Randall's resurfaced in the New Climax space after its original home (once occupied by the legendary Pierre's) was demolished to make way for new condos.
And although the restaurant at 8 South Broadway that had debuted as Swift's Steakhouse in 1960 no longer bears any traces of the original name or ownership (it's now going by the Google-boggling name Authentic Greek Cuisine), one sign still points to its history: "Swift's Steakhouse" is touted in the alley between Broadway and Lincoln Street, proving that old ghosts are difficult to vanquish. Keep reading for a complete list of openings, closings and name changes in March.
