Mayor's Design Awards tonight include some delicious winners

Maggie's could be the most exclusive bar in town -- you can't drink there unless you're a guest of the Patterson Inn, the B&B that opened last year in the historic Croke-Patterson Mansion. But you can drink to the Patterson Inn tonight, when it's named one of the fifteen winners of the 2013 Mayor's Design Awards.

"We have historic buildings made new again through careful renovation," says Mayor Michael Hancock says, "and a few brand-new buildings built to look like they've been there for 100 years." Hancock will be at the Forney Transportation Museum at 6 p.m. tonight to hand out the awards; the event is free and open to the public. You can read more about the awards program here

In the meantime, here's a sneak peak of the restaurant honorees, along with the award descriptions:

"Hogshead Brewery occupies a former auto-service building, embedded in the neighborhood at W. 29th Avenue and Utica Street. The Hogshead team juxtaposed nonstandard materials in its playful re-imagination of this building, with a rustic wooden entrance, a transparent storefront and clear garage doors where the bays used to be. It shapes up to be a social, relaxing atmosphere inside and out, making creative use of iconic brewery nostalgia."

"Doing its part to continue the evolution of South Broadway is Denver staple Illegal Pete's. Owner Pete Turner and his team renovated a former car dealership structure that was set back from the street. We found it award-worthy because, in addition to creating a fresh and original indoor space, Illegal Pete's connected the building to the sidewalk with outdoor active space. Say goodbye to a few parking spaces and hello to a patio, rollup bar, picnic tables, bocce ball court, light strings, canopies, bike racks ... and burritos."

"When Common Grounds moved from its 32nd & Lowell location to 44th and Vallejo in Sunnyside, it bought a nondescript old garage. Soon, owners Ed and Mary Rogers would transform that nondescript building into an architecturally hip, pedestrian-oriented storefront with great street presence and outdoor seating. The coffee shop blends old and new, and now Sunnyside residents are enjoying an invigorating new space along with their jolt of espresso."
