Our Weekly Bread: Katherine's

If you don't do it Hawaiian style, you've never done it Hawaiian style, and if you're not planning to do it Hawaiian style, then turn away now.

But if you can get down and boogie with ham and pineapple, then Katherine's has a sandwich that you'll want to say "aloha" to: the Hawaiian Express.

The sandwich starts with several layers of thinly sliced ham and is topped with a pineapple ring. It's a concept that is brilliant in its simplicity and seeming obviousness, and yet, this is the first time I've seen this on a deli menu.

Granted, not everyone wants tropical fruit on their sammies, but hey, you can't have turkey and Swiss every day. My only real issue with the sandwich was how plain it was, and the fact that the mayo was laid on so heavy that it soaked through the thin slices of sourdough bread. I think some spicy pepperoni, or some mustard, or some better bread -- Katherine's is a bakery, after all -- would spice up this Island lunch.

P.S. Katherine's serves its sandwiches with a side and a cookie, which is hard to beat.
