I'm not a big fan of standing in line at lunchtime. I'm usually too hungry, in too much of a hurry and have little patience for the guy at the front who can't decide what he wants in fifteen seconds or less. So when I walked into Three Sisters Café, I was ready to turn around and walk out. The line on this first, very cold day of fall was twenty people long and doubled back on itself inside the small space. I don't know if Three Sisters is always that busy, or the crowd was the psychological reaction of an entire city switching from the light-appetizers-on-a-patio mentality to the hot-soup-for-comfort mentality -- because Three Sisters makes some killer, steaming, hearty soups.
In fact, Three Sisters' soups are so good that the place has a soup hotline that people can call to find out what's cooking: 303 313-2171. I tried the Four Pepper Corn Chowder, which was rich and spicy and quite delicious. But I also wanted to try the Spanish Tomato, because it smelled awesome....
But wait. Isn't this a sandwich blog? Oh yeah, I forgot. For my sandwich, I tried the Three Sisters Club, and it was one of the best I've had in town. The cook managed to make the bacon crisp, which is not always the case, and the tomatoes were very fresh.
Although the sandwich looked like it was going to be a gut bomb, the dark Bavarian-style roll was actually quite light, fluffy and almost sweet. Combined with the soup, this sandwich made for the kind of meal that keeps the shivers away.
It was even worth the wait in line.
