On October 15, the world lost Hans Riegel, the German baron and confectioner whose name is synonymous with the rainbow-hued, teddy bear-shaped, chewable-soft candies known as gummi bears, which were first introduced to the United States in 1982. Reigel, who died from heart failure, was ninety, and to honor his passing, the mourning crew at the Squeaky Bean, a restaurant that erects shrines to the dearly departed, has created a slew of snow cone cocktails...made with gummi bears.
"I've enjoyed gummi bears ever since I was a kid -- I still love them -- and we've created a fun way to pay homage to Hans by deconstructing his chewy delights, adding some tasty spirits and serving them in a completely different form," says Squeaky Bean owner Johnny Ballen. "I mean, who doesn't like gummi bears and snow cones?" he deadpans.
The bar team is melting the gummi bears down, adding different spirits, pouring them over shaved ice and serving them in traditional white paper cones. There's a green gummi with green chartreuse, a yellow gummi made with pineapple vodka, a red gummi concocted with Charbay raspberry vodka and amaretto, and last but not least, an orange gummy cocktail spirited with Charbay blood orange vodka and dry curacao. "They're really yummy," promises Ballen, and at just five bucks each, they're a steal, too.
Get yours while they last, which is until another extolled body that Ballen deems worthy of a shrine bites the dust. Anyone want to meet over gummi bear snow cone cocktails and bet on who might be next?
