Ten Colorado beer labels you'll be seeing soon
You could spend a small fortune keeping up with every Colorado beer release over the course of a year -- believe me, I know. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't at least try a couple of them. In the old days -- like, three years ago -- beer releases were fairly predictable. Most breweries had one or two seasonals and an occasional new brew. Today, established breweries release new stuff all the time, often without much rhyme or reason. Still other breweries are new and trying to get their beers out there, while a third group has done away with predictability altogether in favor of continually making new beers.
So what's on tap for the second half of 2012? Here are ten beers you can look forward to in the coming days, weeks and months.
This September, Durango's Ska Brewing will debut Autumnal Mole Stout, the first in a series of four seasonal canned stouts that play off ingredients and cultures associated with certain times of the year. It is brewed with cocoa nibs, spices and chile peppers.
Crazy Mountain Brewing, the buzz-worthy Vail-area beer-maker that more than doubled in size this year, will start selling five of its beers in 22-ounce bottles this summer, including its heat-beating Scenic Route Kolsh. The brewery recently signed on with Elite Distributing to have the beers delivered to liquor stores statewide.
New Belgium Brewing has been overhauling its seasonal lineup over the past two years, pouring out the old and tapping the new. The next change will be the introduction of Red Hoptober, a pale ale that will replace the similarly named Hoptober.
Dad & Dude's Breweria, which opened in Centennial in 2010, will can its first beer, Dank IPA, and release it at a party on August 4. The beer is brewing contract-brewed by Bill Eye at Prost Brewing in Denver.
New Belgium was all about collaborations this year, including one with San Diego County's highly respected (but slightly high-maintenance) Alpine Brewing. The breweries did a sour in California and an IPA in Fort Collins. The result is Super IPA, a double IPA that should be out in time for the Great American Beer Festival in October.
Bristol Brewing has rolled out some new beers and some new packaging over the past few months, updating its lineup and its look. The Colorado Springs brewery will tie it all together this winter when it moves into a brand-new location with a thirty-barrel brewing system.
Odell must have been working on this Flemish-style red for a while, and its timing is good because similar beers have been catching on at other breweries around the country. Like Odell's other barrel-aged beers, this one will be released in 750 ml bottles.
Elevation Beer Company opened in May in Poncha Springs with the goal of making both taphouse favorites and specialized barrel-aged beers in bottles. Although it's already had one hit, a Belgian quadruple called Apis IV, this upcoming release will be its first barrel-aged beer. It will be available statewide.
This Belgian-style Golden Ale hasn't been released since 2010; Odell says that the recipe and process for making the beer was inspired by French philosopher Jacques Derrida's theory of Deconstruction. You're going to have to look it up for yourself.
Ian Clark, the head chef at Boulder's Centro Latin Kitchen & Refreshment Palace, opened a nanobrewery, Bru, in his garage just three months ago. But he's already expanded and getting ready to bottle two of his beers: Citrum, an IPA brewed with lemon zest and juniper, and Obitus, a brown ale made with dates and caramelized sugar (label below).
