On Thursday night, Green Russell, Frank Bonanno's sultry, subterranean speakeasy in Larimer Square, is hosting a beer vs. spirits showdown, pitting brews from Avery Brewing against cocktails from Peach Street Distillers -- and pairing them all with a five-course dinner. And unlike a lot of dinners, where you're away from all the action, this is a throwdown that's up close and personal.
"Between Russell's Smokehouse and Green Russell, we've definitely hosted a number of spirit dinners, and a variety of beer dinners, but we've never hosted a seated dinner with both beer and spirits, in the form of a face-off," says Taylor Drew, general manager of Green Russell and Russel's Smokehouse, Bonanno's adjacent barbecue restaurant. "Our guests will get to decide whether the beer pairing or the spirit pairing elevates the course, so it's an interactive experience, and it's definitely going to be a great time," adds Drew, noting that "since the dinner takes place right at the Green Russell bar, there will be a lot of interaction with chef Tim Murphy and representatives from both Avery and Peach Street." Think of it, he says, as a "very fun dinner party with some serious beer and spirits experts."
