Monroe Monroe

4 years ago by Tom Murphy
This fourth EP from Monroe Monroe is a more refined effort than previous offerings, both sonically and in terms of the songwriting. On "Everything You Give," the descending-guitar-riff intro and the way it then winds through the song is reminiscent of Comsat Angels' melancholic compositions, only infused with more upbeat...

Monroe Monroe - "Squeeze"

6 years ago by Dave Herrera
You've heard this sound before. It's nothing new or even particularly novel. At least it won't strike you as such, particularly if you own the first three U2 albums. Just the same, by god, does it sound absolutely fanfreakingtastic! These dudes just completely smash it on this cut! It's a...

Monroe Monroe, December 11 at the Bluebird

6 years ago by Tom Murphy
If you ever heard or saw the name "The Legendary Beep Beeps," you probably — understandably — thought it was going to be something dumb. But the band wasn't, and despite the seeming commercial-rock aspirations in some of its songwriting, there was a core of something ineffably compelling in its...

Fresh off winning a pricey EP recording session from Rocky Mountain Recorders at the Westword Music Showcase awards last month, Monroe Monroe has a lot of material just waiting to be recorded. Michael Monroe made his name as the charismatic frontman of seminal Finnish glam band Hanoi Rocks. Before the tragic death of drummer Nicholas "Razzle" Dingley in December 1984, Hanoi Rocks had established itself as a powerful live act. With a look and sound that would be superficially familiar to most...

Matt Monroe on the second anniversary of Propaganda!, Denver's Best Comedy Night

2 years ago by Byron Graham
Comedy shows come and go all the time, usually whimpering out of existence after a few ignominious months of effort. So when a show reaches its second anniversary, it's truly something to celebrate. Comedy fans can help ring in the anniversary this year on July 27th at Lannie's Clocktower Cabaret. Named 2014's Best Comedy Night by this very publication, Propaganda! has excelled thanks to host and producer Matt Monroe's savvy booking, mingling a roster of enviable headliners with Lannie's classy ambience month after month for free. July's lineup features out-of-towners Raj Silverman and Brandie Posey along with local favorites Chris Charpentier, Adrian Mesa, Dr. Kevin Fitzgerald and headliner Adam Cayton-Holland. Doors open at 7:00pm for the free showcase. In celebration of reaching this milestone, Westword caught up with Monroe to discuss the highlights of the past 2 years and how his commitment to Propaganda! would surprise his exes.

Mile High Steel, Marilyn Monroe and Erika Blumenfeld

10 years ago by Michael Paglia
A funny thing happened to photography on the way to the 21st century: It went from being degraded as an inferior way to convey aesthetic concepts to one of the most significant aspects of contemporary visual culture. The medium provides the foundation not only for a wide array of photo-based...
