Blast from the Past

The Children's Psychiatric Day Care Center is a classic example of Usonian ideals.

The '60s weren't all about the Beatles, drugs and free love. The decade also produced some fabulous architecture, including two modernist buildings that the architecture firm of Hornbein and White created at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. CU has now moved to a new campus at Fitzsimons, and Shea Properties would like to demolish the buildings to make way for a retail/residential complex. Just one obstacle stands in the developer's way: a December 2 recommendation from the Denver Landmark Preservation Commission that the buildings be deemed historic. Now it's up to Denver City Council to approve that recommendation -- or give the okay for Shea to wipe the buildings off the map. -- Patricia Calhoun
