Its so cold even the smokers are few and far between. And I braved this to bring you these pictures. You can thank me later.
Despite the shit weather and the fact that it is a Monday night, the combined appeal of Yeasayer and MGMT sold out the hi-dive. As I got there, a sad-looking foursome was being turned away. It was packed inside, and about 85 degrees, which was awesome considering I was wearing about nine layers
This guy was into it. He was dancing, grooving, hopping around all night. His joy was palpable.
Yeasayer conjured up an ecstatic tribal hoedown, and even they seemed to get caught up in the moment.
Its ten degrees outside, yet the drummer needs no shirt inside. Ah, the wonder of body heat in a confined space.
The juxtaposition of the tribal get-up and make-up with the cell phone communication serves as an excellent metaphor for Yeasayers sound, which explores a similar cross between the exotically primitive and the slickly futuristic.
For a band that relies so heavily on studio technology for songwriting, they managed to pull off the material very well in a live setting. There were a few odd moments and awkward passages, but they set a heavy mood that had me nodding my head, shuffling my feet and getting caught up in the music. The performance was aided in no small part by the fact that all four of these guys are dynamic on stage. They dont stand still much.
So, is this going to spark a trend? I mean, Id love to see this kind of fashion make it out into the real world.
Despite missing more than half of Yeasayers set, it was still one of the best performances Ive seen in months. They sounded great and were fun to watch. What more could one ask?
MGMT seemed to have as many, if not more fans present than Yeasayer, but it didnt sit nearly as well with me.
It looks like MGMT are rocking out harder than they actually were. But that drummer is having some fun, for sure.
MGMT played some fizzy, synth-fueled psych pop. It was pleasant enough, but it did very little to wow me. Maybe I was still in shock from Yeasayer.
The ladies seemed to love it, and who could blame them? Look at that baby face. Look at that smile. Who could resist that?
Luckily, it wasnt all turbans and face paint. The usual beautiful people came out to represent.
If MGMT sounded as trippy as this shot looks, Id like them a lot more.
The tribe gathers to pay tribute to Yeasayer. And give me a dirty look as I shoot their picture.
