The Sand Creek Massacre Healing Run

Captain Silas Soule, who refused to fire on the camp at Sand Creek, is buried at Riverside Cemetery.

Every Thanksgiving since 1999, runners have gathered on the site of the Sand Creek Massacre for a trek to Denver in commemoration of over 150 Cheyenne and Arapaho who were killed on November 29, 1864 by troops led by Colonel John Chivington. Westword editor Patricia Calhoun joined the Northern Arapahoe and other tribal representatives on this year's Sand Creek Massacre Healing Run; photographer Anthony Camera was there on the last day, when the runners reached Denver and headed for the State Capitol.
