Truth is often stranger — not to mention scarier — than fiction, something the Allied Witches demonstrate every year with their fall performance. This year will be no exception: The theater group is presenting Apparition Palestine: A Modern Tragedy, opening tonight at the Mercury Cafe.

“Live theater, to me, has an obligation to shed light on things that you might not be able to perceive in our mainstream media,” says Merc owner and Allied Witches member Marilyn Megenity. “The story is about a young teenage girl and her aunt and her best friend, and the young girl, Miriam, gets a scholarship to go on a program to the United States. So she spends three weeks in the United States and then comes back to Gaza, and it’s the story of what happens when she comes back.

“This not a one-sided, Israel-bashing situation,” Megenity stresses. “We explore the history. By showing you the lives of these women, we try to bring a little more truth about what’s really going on.”

See Apparition Palestine every Friday night through October 31 at the Merc, 2199 California Street; there will be special performances on Saturday, October 9, and Sunday, October 31. All shows are $10 and start at 7:30 p.m.; call 303-294-9258.
Fridays, 7:30 p.m.; Oct. 30-31, 7:30 p.m. Starts: Oct. 1. Continues through Oct. 29, 2010
