The Doom Room at 3 Kings Tavern (Friday, free) Imagine getting on a stage completely unprepared, without any clue what you're going to talk about, until a topic is given to you--and then attempt make it funny while you're at it. Oh, and you're trapped in a box and everyone's watching, but you don't know it. Well, tonight a very special line up of comedians including Kristin Rand, Nathan Lund, Jordan Doll and more will squirm their way through this new adventure in comedy. Lightning Blend Opening Reception at Love Gallery (Friday, free) Art openings are a dime a dozen, but this one, full of contemporary designers, won't disappoint. With more than 25 artists from all over North America, there will be an endless amount of gazing to be had. And you know they always have good free booze at these things -- don't forget to tip.Roll: The Grid at EXDO Event Center (Friday, free-$5) Re-boot your mainframe because the hottest monthly party on wheels rolls back into the EXDO tonight. The ping-pong/karaoke/roller skate party enters the super-information highway for some Tron inspired fun. Dressing up like you're an extra from Rollerball would probably be fine.
EFPalooza Film Festival at The Bug Theater (Friday-Sunday, $5-$10) Over three days, the EFPalooza Film Festival celebrates local filmmakers by giving them a venue to showcase all of their hard work. More than forty local filmmakers will present shorts and features, marking the 1000th film to be played in the festival's twelve-year run. The short films and comedy block will make Friday night a hoot. Check out the lineup here.
Rockabillies Anniversary Party at Rock-A-Billies (Friday-Saturday, free) Roll up your 501s, dust off the leather jacket and grease the hair, because we're going to jive to Reno Divorce, The Living Deads, The Shadow Men, Scarecrow Revival and Jim Jamm Jimmy all weekend long. It's always hip to find a new bar to take a shine to.
Coat Drive at Denver Beer Co (Saturday, free) We all have at least one coat hanging in our closet that could do more good for someone else. Drop off a used coat at either of Denver Beer Co's locations, on Platte Street or at their Canworks facility, and score a free beer. You get warmed by a beer and someone else gets warmed by your old coat -- everybody wins. Felipe Espinosa: Terrorist of John Evans' Colorado Author Talk at Byers-Evans House Museum (Saturday, free) Colorado has a lot to to be famous for, including being home to Felipe Espinosa, one of the nation's first serial killers. Back in 1863, Espinoza went on a spree, and local author and historian Adam James Jones has written a fascinating historical novel documenting his life and crimes. Come out and meet the author and hear some of Colorado's darker history.
2014 Denver Comedy Awards at 3 Kings Tavern (Saturday, free) It might be the beer -- or it might be the weed -- but Denvers comedy scene has been transcendent in the last few years. To celebrate, there is no better way than to crown the who's who of the local scene. It will be an amazing night of hilarity and competition -- especially since it's free. You might even still have time to vote for the winners here.No Enemies: Marade Prep Rally at Capitol Heights Presbyterian Church (Sunday, free) The day off is Monday, so that means we party Sunday night. The Flobots will be holding an open practice jam to make sure everyone is in unison for the Marade on Monday. Bring your instruments and clap those hands to get in the spirit of peace.
A Benefit for Kelsey at Hi-dive (Sunday, $10) There is always plenty of live music to be seen in Denver, but why not do some good while you're at it. Kelsey VanderWerf has been going through her fair share of adversity right now so good folks like comedians Ben Roy, Greg Baumhauer and musical acts The Bunny Gang and The Reckless Nights will make your Sunday night well worth it.
