Faces, Places & Spaces at the Arvada Center (Friday-Sunday, free) The show that Michael Paglia called "unquestionably, one of the most ambitious and interesting exhibits of this summer" is closing on Sunday, so catch it now. The exhibition is in three parts (aptly titled Faces, Places, and Spaces), all featuring work by artists from Colorado and beyond, including Adam Milner's "View Photos of Me," which uses photos from his Facebook profile as inspiration, as well as Evan Colbert's portraits of '70s and '80s punk rockers.Rise! An Aurora Theatre Shooting Benefit at 3 Kings Tavern (Friday, $8-10) In the wake of tragedy comes triumph, as people band together to help each other out. Comics fans are joining in a weekend of fundraisers to benefit the victims of the Aurora shooting. Tonight's event will feature a variety of musical acts, including Little Fyodor & Babushka and Mr. Pacman, as well as a cosplay costume contest and an art exhibition.
Too Much Funstival at various locations (Friday-Sunday) This comedy/music/everything awesome extravaganza can keep you busy all weekend with various events that are all moderately priced, each around $5. With tons of comedians, a slew of bands, and kickball and bouncy castles, you're sure to get your money's worth and have a blast at this jam-packed fest put on by the Fine Gentleman's Club, an amazing comedy quartet.Roll in the Hay 3 at the Sixth Avenue United Church of Christ (Saturday, $10 suggested donation) The Denver Zine Library is a worthy cause, and tonight you can support it by two-stepping. The fundraising hootenanny will feature dance lessons, snacks and country line-dancing -- with all the proceeds going to keeping the Zine Library open, so that we can enjoy checking out handmade publications for years to come.
2012 Denver Minor Disturbance Reunion show at the Mercury Cafe (Saturday, $7-10) Local slam poetry team Minor Disturbance is fresh from winning the Brave New Voices festival, and you can see the team perform tonight at the Merc, along with Minor Disturbance alumni and SlamNuba. Denver's spoken word talent is amazing; this scene has plenty to say.
Denver Modernism Show at the National Western Complex (Saturday-Sunday, $8) Celebrate everything mod and vintage this weekend at the Denver Modernism Show. While Friday costs $20, the admission fee on Saturday or Sunday is a bargain at $8, which will get you access to the Miss Modernism Pageant, tons of beautiful retro items, and the Motorama Car show. For those who feel out of place in this era, the National Western Complex is the place to step back in time this weekend.
Fiesta Cookout at Servicios de la Raza (Saturday, free) Whether you're in it for the car show, music or simply the free food, the fourth annual Festival Cookout is a fabulous way to spend a summer Saturday. There will be plenty of wellness treatments and more at this block party. And did we mention the free food?
Dance Dance Party Party at the 910 Arts Building (Sunday, $5) We've surely told you to check out this cheap and fun dance party before, but it's worth another mention. Tonight's installment, titled Viva La Dance, will continue the ladies-only freestyle dance extravaganza that's sure to be a blast, as well as end your weekend with a workout.
Covet at Goldyn (Sunday, free) Shop for a good cause today at Goldyn boutique's shopping event and cocktail party. Bring unopened toiletries for homeless women, then buy clothing and accessories for yourself. The donations and 20 percent of all sales will go toward the Volunteers of America Brandon Center, so buying pieces from the fall 2012 lines of designers like Alexander Wang, Pamela Love and McQ Alexander McQueen will benefit the world as well as your wardrobe.Colorado Cinema Salon: Hollywood's Last Golden Age at the Denver FilmCenter/Colfax (Sunday, $9.75) Don't even try to wear bellbottoms to this event, warns the Denver FilmCenter's website, even though it will focus on the '70s. But rather than focus on the cringe-worthy fashion of that era, the discussion will center on something remarkable about the decade: cinema. Robert Denerstein and Ron Henderson will participate in what is sure to be a fascinating discussion about Hollywood's Last Golden Age, showing clips from American films from the '70s.
